Bucking ‘less buoyant’ 2Q outlook, H1 auto sales rise by 56%
MANILA: In its joint report, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) revealed that year-to-date (YTD) unit sales figures of their members companies totaled 132,767 units — reflecting 56.1% growth over the same period in 2020 with 85,041 units sold.
Despite the positive development, CAMPI President Atty. Gutierrez pointed out the “measly” 2.2% month-on-month growth. Still, vehicle sales in June 2021 reached 22,550 units, 44.8% more than the 15,578 units recorded in the same month last year. “This is a respite amid the less buoyant consumer outlook for big-ticket items for the second quarter of this year, according to a government survey,” he said.
Gutierrez, also an executive of Toyota Motor Philippines, added, “The auto industry continues to adjust to the effects of the pandemic, at the same time striving to strike a balance between its contribution to the economy and keeping its stakeholders safe and healthy during these unprecedented times.”
Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) paced all auto companies, cornering close to half (49.85%) of total June sales with 11,242 units sold last month, up 4.3% from its May output of 10,779 units. TMP continues to lead YTD sales as well with 63,758 vehicles moved, 41.92% higher than the same period last year (48.02% share).
Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation is in second place with 2,933 units sold in June. Its market share last month was 13%, and YTD performance shows it accounting for almost 15% of sales with 19,858 units sold. In third place is Suzuki Philippines, Inc. with 1,795 units sold last June (7.96% of market) and 9,987 units for the year (7.52% share).
Ford Motor Company Philippines, Inc. is in fourth place with June sales of 1,616 units (7.17% share), and 9,855 vehicles YTD (7.42% share). Completing the top five is Nissan Philippines, Inc. with 1,548 units in sales last June (6.86% share), and 9,047 vehicles sold for the year (6.81% share).
