By mid-2030, want to sell electrified vehicles only: Subaru
MANILA: Electrification of the existing lineup and launching new electrified vehicles in the form of hybrids or pure EVs is now on every automaker's bucket list. The spirit of heading towards an electric and environment-friendly automobile industry is higher than ever before as we see automaker announcing their plans and strategy regarding the future of the electrified cars. Recently, we saw Kia revealing its "Plan S" that aims at Kia launching a BEV model in 2021 and offering 11 battery electric vehicles by 2025. Similarly, Hyundai also announced its plans for the near future and stated that the South Korean automaker is looking at offering 44 electrified vehicles by 2025.
Joining the fleet is Subaru, a Japanese automaker targetting to sell electrified vehicles only by mid-2030. Subaru's portfolio already features the likes of the XV e-Boxer mild-hybrid, Forester e-Boxer, and the Crosstrek/XV Plug-In Hybrid models. Furthermore, since Forester recently partnered with Toyota, the task of offering hybrids and pure-electric vehicles only by 2030 should be too much for the automaker. According to reports, Subaru is also working on an all-battery electric car with Toyota.
"Although we’re using Toyota technology, we want to make hybrids that are distinctly Subaru. It’s not only about reducing CO2 emissions. We need to further improve vehicle safety and the performance of our all-wheel-drive", said Chief Technology Officer Tetsuo Onuki to Reuters. One of the major reasons behind Subaru going big for the electrification of its vehicles is that the automaker wants to cut down the CO2 emissions of vehicles. Moreover, Subaru also wants to bring down the well-to-wheel CO2 emissions from operating vehicles around the globe by 90% or more in 2050.
"With the aim of making Subaru different from other brands, we will further hone the distinctive qualities that make a Subaru a Subaru, maintaining the unique attributes our customers have come to expect. At the same time, as we work to fulfill our social responsibilities, including the protection of the global environment, we will leverage Subaru’s unique character and technological innovation to contribute to the creation of a carbon-free society,", said Tomomi Nakamura, president of Subaru Corporation. As for the sales, Subaru wants that at least 40% of the global vehicle sales should come from electric or hybrid vehicles by 2030.
