Chevron promotes sustainable lifestyle through composting
MANILA: Chevron recently hosted the “Project Bokashi Compost” virtual workshop as part of its annual Volunteer Week. The program aims to promote a sustainable lifestyle among volunteer employees by teaching them to divert food wastes away from landfills and into urban areas where healthy soil can be produced to support local food production.
Chevron teamed up with Bokashi Pinoy Composting, a social enterprise that aims to protect the environment one bucket at a time through its homemade Bokashi Ipa. Chevron gave away Bokashi Compost kits and grocery bags to 56 families in Tondo, Manila with the help of St. John Bosco Parish and Bureau of Plant Industry’s “Gulayan ni Juan.” Gulayan ni Juan is a community initiative that help families in Tondo sustain their livelihood by selling local produce. The donation drive aims to help these families grow more crops and earn more by using Bokashi Composting technology.
Around 127 employees of Chevron Philippines, Inc. (CPI) and Chevron Holdings Inc. (CHI) participated in the virtual workshop wherein they learned the importance of composting and the Bokashi Compost Ipa technology process. Bokashi Ipa is made with rice hull with good microbes which is vital to Bokashi composting. The workshop was facilitated by Certified Bokashi Compost Mentor and Edible Urban gardener Karen Pascua.
Chevron Volunteer Week 2021 aims to provide sustainable aid to local communities and promote healthy and sustainable lifestyle among its volunteers.
