Citroën C5 Aircross gets a new powertrain and a PHEV variant
MANILA: Launched in the yar 2017, the Citroën C5 Aircross has managed to taste quite a lot of success ever since its inception. Moreover, the 2019 model of the five-seater SUV by the French automobile manufacturer grabbed the "Comfort Award" in the annual carwow "Car of the Year Awards". Also, the French flagship SUV was bestowed with the "Car of the Year" and "Best Medium SUV" titles by DieselCar and EcoCar magazine "Top 50".
Now, following a rather successful campaign so far, Citroën has decided to equip its flagship SUV with a newer and better powertrain. In the UK, the Flair and Flair+ variants of the Citroën C5 Aircross will now be offered with a brand new PureTech 130 S&S (Stop & Start) EAT8 eight-speed automatic powertrain. The new mechanical setup will replace the previous offered PureTech 180 S&S EAT8 automatic powertrain.
As for the specs, the current Citroën C5 Aircross comes housing a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol-fed, 1.6-litre PureTech petrol-fed, 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel-fed, and a 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel-fed engine. While two petrol-powered motors produce 130 hp and 180 hp each, the two diesel-fed mills, on the other hand, also generate 130 and 180 hp of maximum power, respectively. Citroën will start putting the new engine under the hood of the C5 Aircross from February 2020.
Moving from the petrol- and diesel-fed powertrains, the French automaker is also set to bring out the Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid at the Brussels Motor Show that will be held from January 10-19, 2020. The electrified SUV will join the fleet that already incorporates the likes of the Peugeot 3008 GT Hybrid4 and Opel Grandland X Hybrid4 / Vauxhall Grandland X Hybrid4. It should also feature the same specs as the PSA Group aims at sharing tech among all of its brands to save on money and effort.
The Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid will get 225 hp of maximum power and 340 Nm of peak torque from the electrified powertrain. While the 1.6-litre PureTech engine will produce 180 hp, the electric motor, whereas the electric motor will contribute 110 hp. Powering the electric motor will be a 13.2 kWh battery, and the SUV will sport a 50 km of WLTP all-electric range. To no surprise, the SUV will feature a front-wheel-drive system.
"Unveiled as a World Premiere, this offer at the heart of the market allows as many people as possible to benefit from the versatility of a plug-in hybrid model. C5 Aircross SUV is a true ë-Comfort Class Silent Urban Vehicle offering a range of 50 kmi in 100% electric mode. Already a reference in comfort and modularity, it takes another step forward in the Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme with this plug-in hybrid version: enhanced cocoon-effect and driving experience for everyday electric driving in complete peace of mind", stated the French Automaker. Citroën is aiming to electrify its complete lineup by 2025.
