The 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit will feature a conference on the first two days, exhibitions of the latest electric vehicle models as well as battery and charging technologies, and the launch of the Philippine Battery Consortium. With the theme “Plug-In and Accelerate,” the 11th PEVS will highlight the support of the government and other sectors for the wider adoption of electric vehicles in the Philippines.
2022 saw an increase in electric vehicle sales in the Philippines. According to Statista, 1,013 electric vehicles were sold locally last year, up from 843 in 2021 and 378 in 2020.
According to EVAP, the main reason for this rise is the implementation of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) or the Republic Act No. 11697, gives incentives to electric vehicles by allocating dedicated parking slots for them in establishments, assigning green routes across cities and municipalities, and exempts them from traffic coding schemes.
“Implementation remains a big challenge as it involves extensive output and promotion. The EV industry is still making necessary adjustments in terms of supplies and infrastructures. Transitions are on the way in terms of regulations being set by different government agencies involved,” EVAP President Edmund Araga stated.
The DOE also supports the electric vehicle adoption in the Philippines by launching programs involving renewable energy sources. “Such initiatives are related to the development of local EV infrastructures. One I can cite is the e-App program that maps out locations of active EV charging stations across the country,” Araga said.
The DOE also contributes to the ongoing development of the Comprehensive Roadmap for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CREVI) and facilitates public consultations regarding the Vehicle Fuel Economy Labeling Program and the Fuel Economy Performance Rating.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also takes part by mapping out its Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy, while the Department of Transportation (DOTr) puts priority on electric vehicles in its Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.
Other government agencies are also doing their part by incorporating electric vehicles in their fleets.
EVAP also acknowledges the contribution of the private sector as they establish more electric vehicle charging stations in strategic locations nationwide. Many private companies are also reinforcing their commitment to carbon neutrality by upgrading their own fleets.
All these and more will be discussed at the conference on the first two days of the 11th PEVS. The latest electric vehicle models, as well as battery and charging technologies, will also be exhibited at the three-day event. EVAP stated that this year’s summit will focus on two-, three-, and four-wheeled battery electric vehicles.
Another highlight to look forward to is the launch of the Philippine Battery Consortium, which aims to address concerns regarding electric vehicle battery supplies and costs.
“Of course, the three-day event will be a bigger venue for networking as well as for plenary and moderated discussions, which everyone would surely find helpful,” Araga added.
