“Our top priority at Subaru is to provide customers with vehicles built to the highest levels of safety. Accomplishing this milestone reflects our commitment to improving and innovating the safety features and technology in our vehicles year over year,” Subaru of America, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Thomas Doll stated.
EyeSight uses stereo camera technology to provide driver assist features like Adaptive Cruise Control and Pre-Collision Braking. This technology can detect cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycles on the path taken by the vehicle. Currently, 91% of Subaru’s global sales come from models with EyeSight.
All 2022 Subaru models with EyeSight received the highest possible rating of “Superior” for front crash prevention from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Eight Subaru models also bagged IIHS Top Safety and Top Safety+ awards this year. To get these awards, vehicles must earn “Good” ratings in each of the six crashworthiness tests conducted by IIHS, “Good” or “Acceptable” ratings for headlights, and “Advanced” or “Superior” ratings for available front crash prevention. Models that come exclusively with “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights receive the “Plus” award.
As of July 2022, Subaru has already won 63 Top Safety Pick+ awards, more than any other car brand.
Pre-collision braking and throttle management can be initiated by EyeSight when it detects vehicles approaching from the front in order to prevent collision. According to IIHS, this technology decreases rear-end crashes with injuries by up to 85%. Additionally, EyeSight reduces the rate of injuries to pedestrians by up to 35%.
EyeSight can detect vehicles in front, traffic lanes, obstacles, and pedestrians through the two cameras installed behind the windshield. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, this technology has helped lower the rate of pedestrian-related insurance claims by 41%.
Subaru, which places a high value on protecting lives, targets to achieve zero fatal traffic accidents by 2030. With an upgraded stereo camera that has a significantly wider viewing angle and improved image recognition and processing software, the latest version of EyeSight offers better performance in a wider range of situations. The system also comes with Automatic Emergency Steering, which can help steer the vehicle to prevent collision at speeds of up to 80 kph when combined with Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.
