Ford preps Mustang GTD for sub-7 minute Nurburgring lap

MANILA: Ford is now prepping to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap time on the famous Nurburgring race track via the all-new Mustang GTD.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much horsepower and torque can the Ford Mustang GTD produce?

The Ford Mustang GTD can produce up to 810 horsepower and 897 Newton-meters of torque.
  • What is the top speed of the Ford Mustang GTD?

According to Ford, the Mustang GTD can reach a top speed of 325 kilometers per hour.
  • Per Ford, the Mustang GTD was engineered from the ground up to conquer the 20.8-kilometer-long German race track in under seven minutes.

To note, Nurburgring’s official website indicates that road-legal production cars capable of ripping through “The Green Hell” in under seven minutes belong to an exclusive club. Most examples capable of the said feat are various high-performance versions of the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

The Mustang GTD, however, has several elements that can help it deliver the American brand’s promise of an official sub-seven-minute lap of the said race track. For starters, its supercharged 5.2-liter V8 is capable of producing up to 810 horsepower and 897 Newton-meters of torque, as confirmed by the Blue Oval car brand.

With the aforementioned engine output, as well as a drag reduction system, the Michigan-based marque says the Mustang GTD can reach a top speed of 325 kilometers per hour.

The vehicle was likewise provided with a dry-sump oil system for consistent lubrication, a revised intake and exhaust system, a smaller supercharger pulley, carbon ceramic brakes, and a set of semi-active suspension dampers.

“We’ve been laser focused since day 1 to make Mustang GTD the first-ever supercar with world-class performance and the soul of a Mustang. GTD’s heart is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8, packing more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS,” Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall said.

“We’ve combined the work of talented engineers and designers, as well as an extremely capable driver, with Mustang GTD technology, power, and aerodynamics. We can’t wait to deliver on our sub-7-minute promise to GTD customers,” Goodall added.

For now, Ford has not disclosed when the Nurburgring run will be performed, nor did it share the identity of the “extremely capable driver” Goodall was referring to.

In the Philippine market, the Ford Mustang nameplate is available as the V8-powered GT Premium and the inline-4-powered EcoBoost Premium. Pricing for the models is set at P3.999 million and P3.499 million, respectively.
