Geely Holding Group brands sell 200K electrified vehicles in 2020
MANILA: Almost one in 10 vehicles that the Geely Holding Group brands sold last year are equipped with hybrid or pure electric power trains.
Compared to the previous years when electrified vehicles were "barely a couple of percent of sales," Geely attained almost 10% (more than 200,000 electrified vehicles sold in 2020) of total sales —a major milestone for the auto conglomerate.
The vision of the Geely Holding Group is a "sustainable future" and through this vision, the brands of Geely have all taken the initiative towards achieving an electrified future.
As each brand caters to consumers in various markets with diverse needs, Geely Holding has undertaken an approach of developing products with different levels of electrification (plug-in hybrid or PHEV, pure electric , and more) instead of pursuing a completely electric route.
Despite the unstable market conditions last year, given extended lockdown guidelines and production shutdowns for COVID-19, Volvo Cars was able to observe an exponential increase in global sales of its pure electric recharge and plug-in hybrid models.
Volvo targets that, by 2025, 50% of the brand’s sales will come from electrified vehicles. Its 2020 performance is giving confidence the brand's officials that this target will be met ahead of schedule.
The electric performance brand Polestar started delivering its first pure electric crossover SUV, the Polestar 2, to customers during the second half of 2020.
Coupled with the commitment of the Chinese brand toward manufacturing capability and virtual purchasing in China, Polestar was able to overcome the pandemic and push through with its delivery commitments to numerous customers worldwide earlier than expected.
Geely Auto, which caters to consumers in industries where charging infrastructure has yet to attain the level reached in mature European markets, continuously launched new hybrid powertrain alternatives in its latest models. This paved the way for electrified vehicles to reach more consumers globally.
In urban areas having a reliable charging infrastructure, the marque has boosted its cost-efficient high-tech plug-in hybrid models toward greater recognition.
Lynk & Co, which officially opened its first club in Amsterdam last year, started listing orders for the hybrid 01 model.
In the European industry, the brand will run on a subscription business model that provides only electrified and hybrid models, thereby upholding greener mobility.
In the commercial vehicle (CV) industry, the Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group (GCV) as well as its subsidiary brands Farizon and London EV Company Limited (LEVC), have launched electrified commercial vehicles, including zero-emission range-extended vans and taxis, hydrogen fuel cell passenger buses, pure electric light trucks, and more specialized electric vehicles (EVs).
Last year, GCV discreetly started its worldwide expansion through signed joint agreements in Korean, Middle Eastern, and European markets.
During the 2020 Beijing Auto Show, Geely Holding introduced its open-source pure electric Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which is considered a key component of the electrified future of Geely, and previewed the first model that Lynk & Co ZERO Concept has developed.
Open-source entails that the design is open to developers and brands worldwide. This paves the way for Geely to become an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) producer and mobility technology service provider.
During the previous decade, Geely was able to set the foundation for an electrified future. But ten years from now, Geely is also expected to start advancing towards a more sustainable future.
