Honda and Takata, the Partnership Ends
MANILA: The case of faulty air bags of Takata Corporation is not new to us and neither does the problem faced by many renowned automakers due to it. No doubt, the Takata itself bear the major blow in terms if image or profits but the defect crisis indeed reflected the sign of troubled relations in businesses.
Honda Motor Company, undoubtedly being Takata's largest customer for airbag inflator has recently announced that they will no longer use Takata airbags in future cars. The announcement comes after Honda concluded that Takata “misrepresented and manipulated test data.” The entire problem was about defective propellant and inflator which could not deploy properly at the time of crash and as a result showering metal debris into cabin. The same became the reason of deaths and injuries in many cars as well.
Not just the Honda, even Mazda is also reported to discontinue the use of Takata airbags. The Subaru and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation are also considering to drop Takata. So, this incident becomes an epic example of high slap-down to the most long lasting, effective, and mutually protective ties between two big brands of automobile sector.
