Hyundai i20 teaser sketches revealed before its Geneva Motor Show debut
MANILA: Despite the heavily covered spy photos of a seemingly production-ready Hyundai i20 circulating online, the South Korean automaker remains coy on the details about its new generation hatchback. Instead, the car brand released sketches of the new i20 ahead of its global reveal next month during the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
Based on the sketches, the new-generation Hyundai i20 will be the first model to carry the brand’s new design language, ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ that will be carried out to all future Hyundai vehicles. According to Hyundai, ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ is “defined by the harmony between the four fundamental elements of proportion, architecture, styling, and technology. Its aim is to bring instinctive beauty and create emotional value and desirability in Hyundai vehicles.”
The hatch sports Hyundai’s trademark massive cascading grille accompanied by large air intakes at both ends. The sharp headlights with hockey stick LED daytime running lights are strikingly similar to that of the new Sonata. Further below the bumper is a front skirt for an added sporty look. On the side, the hatch rides on a set of massive two-toned alloy wheels and a sharply styled C-pillar with a coupe-like roofline integrating into the rear. On the back is a similar sharp taillight with a narrow LED strip connecting the two just below the brand’s insignia. On top, you’ll see a spoiler and sharks’ fin while the bottom of the i20 gets a massive diffuser integrated into the bumper and a heavily styled boot-lid. Based on the sketch, the new 2020 Hyundai i20 will have a dual-tone finish. In this case, a red body paint with blacked-out roof matched with black front and rear bottom trims.
We can’t really tell you anything about the cabin, but we do expect it to have the usual specs like the dual 10.25-inch digital screens for the instrument console and infotainment system, leather-wrapped steering wheels and seats for a plush feel. Conversely, we’re hoping for the i20 to have some connectivity features that are increasingly becoming ubiquitous like USB ports for the second row and wireless charging. Under the hood, we’re guessing that the Hyundai compact hatch will run on the new 1.0-liter turbocharged engine found in Kia Picanto, a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, or maybe both will be an engine option.
All speculations will be put to rest when Hyundai unveils the i20 during the 89th Geneva Motor Show which will run from March 5 to 15, 2020, in Palexpo, Grand-Saconnex, Switzerland.
