Hyundai may introduce a rival to the Xpander, Ertiga, and others soon
MANILA: Hyundai boasts one of the biggest SUV and crossover portfolio that incorporates the likes of Venue, Kona, Tucson, Creta, Santa Fe, and Palisade. Alongside the popular SUVs and crossovers, the South Korean automobile manufacturer has also got some amazing hatchbacks and sedans.
Did you check out the recently launched all-new i10 yet? Okay, coming back to the topic, even with such a large car lineup, Hyundai has been missing out on benefiting from the growing MPV segment.
Yes, the very segment that comprises of the Mitsubishi Xpander, Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Avanza, and others. The compact seven-seater MPV segment has ballooned quite a bit in recent times, and Hyundai must be thinking of clinching on to a significant part of the market share.
Punnet Anand, the senior general manager and group head of Hyundai India, has mentioned that the automaker will certainly look forward to bring out a compact three-row MPV, provided there is enough demand for one in the market.
Also, looking at various Japanese automakers like Toyota, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Honda making both name and money off the segment, Hyundai might just be feeling a little jealous, maybe? Also, Hyundai recently broke the news that it will be putting up a manufacturing plant in Indonesia.
So, how does that news relate to Hyundai making a seven-seater MPV? Well, Indonesia vaunts both a big market and production hub of several MPVs including the Avanza, Ertiga, Mobilio, and Xpander.
Back in 2012, Hyundai previewed a compact MPV concept called Hexa Space. It looked pretty similar to what the on-sale MPVs look like and measured around 4.4 meters long.
So, could Hyundai use the Hexa Space as its inspiration and base for their final production model of the MPV? All we can do is wait for the automaker to release an official statement.
Nonetheless, we hope for Hyundai to jump into the MPVs waters and provide the customers with another great option in the segment.
