Hyundai Mobility Global Innovation Center to rise in Singapore

MANILA: The Hyundai Mobility Global Innovation Center (HMGICs) will be established in Singapore to boost innovation initiatives, with support and approval from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

The mobility innovation center will be situated in the Jurong Innovation District in Singapore, and is considered as a one-stop advanced production hub. The laboratory also houses a dynamic community of aspiring researchers, infrastructure suppliers, and training facilities. Construction will commence in May, and its completion is expected in the second half of 2022.

Due to its excellent track record for open innovation, Singapore is regarded as the ideal site for Hyundai to conduct testing of its groundbreaking ideas like HMGICs. Also, Singapore actively promotes the use of new technology, such as smart urban mobility, digitalization, and artificial intelligence. This is part of its Smart Nation venture to boost the implementation of digital innovation across various industries. Through the HMGICs, Hyundai will work with forward-thinking companies and academic institutions in Singapore to promote open innovation.

HMGICs will assist in ensuring the transition of the company into a smart mobility solution platform. It will also help make sure that it will continue to work as an open innovation laboratory, aside from securing sustainable growth.

The laboratory will also explore innovative ideas and technologies to change the global market for future mobility solutions. It will also aid in determining the future business path of the company.

The laboratory will develop and present new and future business ideas on mobility for potential extension into global markets. Integrating the open innovation efforts of Hyundai with the fertile environment of Singapore, the HMGICs would validate concepts like multi-modal mobility operations.

The new mobility innovation center will also spearhead attempts to enter new markets and consumers with cutting-edge technology to improve the sales, production, research, and development of automobiles. Through the combination of Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and other advanced technologies, the innovation laboratory will develop a human-centered smart production platform.

The laboratory will also evaluate a service with numerous transportation modes, aside from on-demand shuttle and last-mile mobility through an electric scooter.

Through HMGICs, Hyundai Motor will look for strategies to incorporate smart technologies that change the automobile production chain, which includes growth, manufacturing, and sales. Furthermore, the new manufacturing hub of Hyundai will assist in making automotive facilities safer. It will also dramatically reduce the workload of employees, as it will only utilize human resources whenever necessary. Hyundai believes that the effort will protect new customers and markets.

Hyundai wants to look into new processes of vehicle development suitable for smart manufacturing while continuing the increase in the use of virtual reality (VR) technology in vehicle production.

The firm also plans to have collaborations with competitive industry partners to evaluate new, specialized mobility solutions. In particular, the automobile company will assess a possible partnership on a pilot study for the Smart City project in Singapore.

Hyundai will seek open innovation through joint ventures with world-class academic institutions like Nanyang Technical University, aside from co-founding separate research centers.

HMGICs will build a small-scale pilot electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant to serve as a testing site for the human-focused production platform. The manufacture of EVs is ideal for a smart manufacturing platform since EVs have fewer parts as compared to automobiles with internal combustion engines.

The mobility innovation center is also perceived to boost the transformation of Hyundai into a smart mobility solution provider. Through the presence of Hyundai in Singapore, the automobile company will also make its way for expansion into an international innovation network in Southeast Asia, with hubs built in China, Germany, Israel, U.S., and Korea.
