Hyundai, NTU establishes partnership to achieve carbon neutrality for Singapore

MANILA: Hyundai Motor Group, through the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS),  has partnered up with Singapore-based Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to conduct research in the advancement of carbon neutrality, hydrogen energy business, and advanced energy systems.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the main objective of Hyundai Motor Group's partnership with Nanyang Technological University (NTU)?

The partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and NTU aims to advance research in carbon neutrality, hydrogen energy, and advanced energy systems, specifically tailored to Singapore’s unique characteristics.
  • How long will the partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and Nanyang Technological University last?

The partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and Nanyang Technological University will span three years.
  • The aforementioned partnership will span three years, and it will also cover alternative energy sources deemed suitable to be utilized with “Singapore’s unique characteristics.”

Per Hyundai, the Southeast Asian city-state has had difficulties in moving towards carbon neutrality. It is, after all, a small nation with limited resources. At present, the country heavily relies on natural gas for 95 percent of its power generation.

Thanks to the partnership, the difficulties may be overcome by Hyundai’s expertise in hydrogen power. Specifically, the South Korean automotive marque will help implement several hydrogen production technologies and businesses in Singapore.

Examples include the car brand’s plastic-to-hydrogen (P2H) and waste-to-hydrogen production systems (W2H). For P2H, hydrogen will be produced through the use of food waste and sewage sludge. W2H, meanwhile, uses non-recyclable plastic.

“HMGICS is a global hub for Hyundai Motor Group’s future mobility innovation. Through this partnership, we aim to accelerate our research in the field of innovative technologies, ultimately enhancing the commercial viability of our sustainable mobility solutions,” Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of HMGICS Hyun Sung Park said.

Additionally, Hyundai will establish a tripartite research center together with NTU and Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research. Through the said three-way partnership, the parties involved will explore advanced manufacturing technologies involving artificial intelligence, robotics, and 3D printing.

The end goal of the tripartite partnership is a greener future in Singapore via sustainable manufacturing and mobility.
