Hyundai partners with EV maker Canoo for all-electric platform
MANILA: Hyundai Motor Group is partnering with subscription-based electric vehicle (EV) maker Canoo to collaborate on an EV platform that the Korean automaker can use for electric Hyundai and Kia vehicles.
Canoo’s share will be its engineering expertise in developing a fully scalable, all-electric platform to meet Hyundai and Kia specifications. This will allow both Hyundai and Kia to produce cost-competitive compact to purpose-built units EVs.
This development is part of Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment of US$87 billion over the next five years to push the growth of its EV program.
“We were highly impressed by the speed and efficiency in which Canoo developed their innovative EV architecture, making them the perfect engineering partner for us as we transition to become a frontrunner in the future mobility industry. We will collaborate with Canoo engineers to develop a cost-effective Hyundai platform concept that is autonomous ready and suitable for mass adoption,” said Albert Biermann, Head of Research & Development, Hyundai Motor Group.
“We have been working diligently to develop a bold new electric vehicle and partnering with a global leader like Hyundai is a validating moment for our young company. It is a real honor for us to help Hyundai explore EV architecture concepts for their future models,” said Ulrich Kranz, in charge of Canoo.
