Hyundai releases 2020 i30 details, hatchback gets hybrid option

MANILA: Ahead of its official debut at the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show, South Korean automobile major Hyundai Motor Company has released pictures and technical details of the upgraded 2020 i30 crossover hatchback. The C-segment i30 gets new connectivity features and an optional 48v mild hybrid system. The car was last upgraded in 2018.

Hyundai has lent a major facelift to the i30 this time. The car sports a wider grille. It gets new, slimmer headlight units with optional multifaceted reflectors (MFRs). The new V-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) also play their part in enhancing the car’s look.
The five-door Hyundai i30, at the back, sports a newly designed bumper which improves the car’s aerodynamics. The rear LED taillights are also V-shaped to match the front units.

The 2020 Hyundai i30 facelift gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Wireless phone charging comes as standard. The car comes with Hyundai’s Bluelink system and includes a free 5-year subscription for buyers opting for the navigation service.

The upgraded Hyundai i30 will be available in a number of powertrain options. These include the 1.0-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) petrol motor which produces 120PS maximum power and is mated to a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), besides the already available 6-speed manual gearbox. The 1.6-litre diesel engine produces 115 PS and has the same transmission options like the 1.5-liter petrol unit. Both engines come with an optional 48v mild-hybrid unit which increases the car’s fuel efficiency.

The 2020 i30 is equipped with Hyundai’s SmartSense safety package. Its lane following assist function automatically adjusts the steering and keeps the car in the lane. The collision-avoidance system activates the brakes when the car is in reverse gear. Other features include blind spot detection, high beam assist, driver attention warning, and speed limit warning among others. There’s also the Hyundai eCall feature which automatically contacts emergency services when the airbag sensor is triggered.

The current version of the Hyundai i30 in the N-line trim was launched in Malaysia last year. Only 20 units of the car were put up for sale. The upgraded i30, when launched, will renew its competition with Volkswagen Golf GTI, FK8 Honda Civic Type R, Renault Megane, and the Peugeot 308 GTi.
