Jaguar Land Rover opens EMC lab in UK to ensure connectivity and electronics

MANILA: Jaguar Land Rover has opened its electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) laboratory at Gaydon, UK, which will ensure that future vehicles meet legislation and quality standards for connectivity and electronics. The new Range Rover Sport was the first model to undergo a testing program in the facility.

EMC is the ability of electrical systems to operate properly in their electromagnetic environment. It limits the unintentional generation, propagation, and reception of electromagnetic energy to reduce the risk of electromagnetic interference.

The EMC laboratory has two anechoic chambers: an electrically “quiet” rolling road where engineers can test vehicles in motion and equipment to evaluate the efficiency of individual components such as batteries and electric motors. Among the features that will be tested for EMC are Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, 4G, 5G, adaptive cruise control, wireless charging, and blind spot monitoring.

“The importance of testing our vehicles for electromagnetic compatibility cannot be underestimated. Opening this new testing facility is an important step forward for the business and it will play a crucial role in helping us deliver quality, legal, and customer satisfaction,” Jaguar Land Rover Electromagnetics and Compliance Senior Manager Peter Phillips stated.

EMC testing continues to be more essential as the number of electric powertrains and the range of digital services on vehicles continue to expand. The new EMC laboratory shows Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to offer the latest in-vehicle connectivity through its Reimagine strategy.
