Jeep unveils its first EV, the Avenger subcompact SUV

MANILA: At the 2022 Paris Motor Show, Jeep revealed the all-new Jeep Avenger, the brand’s first-ever battery electric vehicle (BEV).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the range of the Jeep Avenger?

The battery pack specifically has a capacity of 400 kilometers in the WLTP cycle and 550 kilometers in the urban cycle.
  • What features does the Jeep Avenger have to help it tackle rough terrain?

The Jeep Avenger is the first front-wheel drive Jeep vehicle to come standard with Selec-Terrain and Hill Descent Control, which, along with the vehicle's ground clearance and exceptional approach and departure angles, establish it as a benchmark in the segment.
  • As the company strives to become the global leader in zero-emission SUVs, the compact Jeep Avenger leads the introduction of a portfolio of capable, completely electric vehicles that are scaled appropriately for Europe. It also plays a crucial role in a global electrification plan.

The Avenger, a compact SUV with the Jeep DNA built in from the ground up, was created to meet the demands of customers who are always connected. It is a unique combination of capability, style, functionality, and technology.

“The new Jeep Avenger represents a key milestone for the brand as it is the first of a portfolio of all-new Jeep BEVs to be introduced in Europe,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO.

“It offers Jeep brand capability that is rightsized for the European market and at the Paris Motor Show, we are showcasing why it is a great all-electric Jeep brand alternative to current players in the B-SUV segment.”

Developed with the specific needs of European customers in mind, the new Avenger is a compact SUV which, at just four meters in length, is positioned in the rapidly growing B-SUV, the second biggest European segment in terms of volume.

In 2023, the B- SUV segment is expected to reach an annual total of 2.2 million sales, which accounts for one in five vehicles sold in Europe. The new Avenger is positioned under Renegade complementing the Jeep brand offering, in the B-SUV segment.

Early next year, the Jeep Avenger will hit the dealerships, but in most European markets, clients can now pre-book the limited-edition First Edition, a striking model with all the bells and whistles.

This makes it a worthwhile and desirable option for anyone seeking a zero-emission Jeep brand alternative to the more established companies in the market.

The new Jeep Avenger seeks to increase its customer base by attracting those with active lifestyles who are seeking a capable and contemporary design with small exterior dimensions and roomy interiors.

The new Avenger offers unmatched driving experience on- and off-road capability due to the strong power and torque as well as a specific electric powertrain calibration.

Emotors, a partnership between Stellantis and Nidec Leroy-Somer Holding, is the first to introduce the second-generation 400 Volt electric drivetrain. It produces 260 Nm of maximum torque and 115 kW, or 156 horsepower.

The new 54 kWh battery, which is also made by Stellantis, features a high energy density and fantastic nominal to usable energy conversion rates.

The battery pack specifically has a capacity of 400 kilometers in the WLTP cycle and 550 kilometers in the urban cycle and is made up of 17 modules and 102 cells using NMC 811 Lithium-Ion chemistry.

As well as having been tested for over two million miles, the battery is incredibly small, barely noticeable, and can be found in the middle tunnel, under the front and back seats, respectively. In addition, it is safeguarded during off-road driving by a high ground clearance and underbody skid plates.

Three minutes of charge is required to provide the Jeep Avenger a travel distance of 30 km using a 100 kW Mode 4 cable in direct current connected to fast public charge; or 24 minutes is enough to charge the batteries from 20 to 80% charge.

The vehicle can probably be driven for days without recharging given that European customers travel 30 km on average each day. Meanwhile, it takes 5.5 hours to "fill up" (go from zero to 100%) using an 11 kW Mode 3 cable for alternating current linked to a Wallbox or public station.

A Jeep SUV's capability is a key component, and owing to the 4xe Hybrid Plug-In technology and current fully electric powertrains, this capability now includes a more environmentally friendly approach.

The Jeep Avenger is the first front-wheel drive Jeep vehicle to come standard with Selec-Terrain and Hill Descent Control, which, along with the vehicle's ground clearance and exceptional approach and departure angles, establish it as a benchmark in the segment.

Thanks to the combination of short overhangs and large wheels, the Avenger offers the best ground clearance in the category (200 millimeters), as well as outstanding approach (20 degrees), breakover (20°) and departure (32°) angles, which are essential for off-road driving but also useful in city life, for example when driving up a steep parking ramp.

The Avenger adopts a "design approach," delivering a sleek, contemporary take on Jeep styling. The vehicle's front sports the recognizable seven-slot grille, a genuine Jeep brand trademark that has changed from a vertical to a more functionally efficient arrangement.

Traditional trapezoidal wheel arches, which are used to maximize articulation, are visible from the side. The car has massive 18-inch wheels with a sturdy design and diamond-cut finish that are mounted on 690mm-diameter tires.

Lastly, the floating "C" pillar, a common feature in the current line-up, reinforces the dynamism of the silhouette, which was carefully designed to improve aero efficiency.

In the rear, the vehicle features signature-lights inspired by the classic X fuel cans. This “X” is a recurring theme inside and outside via the “X-Camo”, a pattern which combines the concept of “camouflage” with the letter “X”.

The center tunnel dividers may be changed to accommodate different object sizes or even eliminated to make room for larger objects. They were designed with flexibility and modularity in mind.

Under the automatic transmission buttons, there is an additional useful area that is covered by a folding magnetic cover. A 1.5-liter bottle of water can be kept here while a cell phone is being charged.

Design to function rules have also been applied to the trunk of the Jeep Avenger. Its volume, which is among the best in the segment (380 liters), and functionality can be seen in the rear hatch's width, which has been increased to over one meter, and the addition of a hands-free power liftgate, a feature never before seen in the segment.

Made for “always connected” customers, the new Jeep Avenger ensures a great digital on-board experience. All versions will be equipped with a 10.25-inch radio screen Uconnect Infotainment combined with a full digital cluster available in two variants (seven and 10.25 inches).

The brand-new Jeep Avenger also provides a number of features and services that customers can use remotely.

For instance, consumers may easily find the position of their cars from their cellphones thanks to the Jeep Mobile App. Additionally, users can use a vocal assistant to communicate directly with the Avenger and perform tasks like locking and unlocking their doors, checking the battery level, adjusting the climate, and charging the car.

The Jeep Avenger offers a full array of driving assistance features. It boasts Level 2 autonomous driving, which automatically adjusts speed and trajectory, and makes use of Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering.
