Jetta brand goes official at 2019 Auto Shanghai

MANILA: Volkswagen announced the arrival of its sub-brand Jetta in China no to so long ago and the German automaker has finally unveiled the brand and its product lineup at 2019 Auto Shanghai.

The VW-FAW joint-venture will be offering vehicles targetted at the younger population of China. The sub-brand will specifically aim to create an automobile marketplace in the lesser developed regions in the country.

In order to make the presence of this new brand felt, VW-FAW will be opening around 200 dealerships in China by the end of 2019, while the production of the cars with the Jetta badge will take place in Chengdu.

Not only the brand will hire a separate team for marketing the brand and its offering across the country, but it will also make use of some unique and non-conventional methods in order to expand its reach. Mobile sales trucks, digital showrooms, and lifestyle-oriented activations are all a part of the proposition.

Coming to the product lineup of the sub-brand Jetta, it comprises of three vehicles. First of the lot is the VA3 compact sedan which is based on the China-spec Jetta and is underpinned by the PQ25 platform.

We have already seen this platform laying the foundation of vehicles like Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Santana, Audi A1, and SEAT Toledo. Underpinned by the VW’s MQB platform, the other two offerings are compact crossovers, namely VS5 and VS7. While the VS5 comes with a five-seat setup, the VS7 boasts a seven-seat arrangement.

Moreover, the two compact crossovers aren’t completely new vehicles either and are based on the SEAT Ateca and Tarraco, respectively. While Jetta is a sub-brand, the quality of the vehicles offered under new badge will be of Volkswagen level.

The production line will also strictly follow the same manufacturing standards as the parent company. The testing of the Jetta vehicles will be carried out at the Changchun facility. Jetta will start delivering its cars to customers from the third quarter of 2019.
