According to the office of the local sheriff of Wasatch County, where the accident occurred, Block was riding a snowmobile on a steep slope when the vehicle overturned and landed on top of him.
“He was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident,” Wasatch County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. “Mr. Block was riding with a group but was alone when the accident occurred.”
Block began competing in rally driving in 2005 when he was named Rookie of the Year in the Rally America Championship. From then, he achieved podium finishes in the World Rallycross Championship and rallycross medals at the X Games.
Block also participated in motocross, skateboarding, and snowboarding competitions.
Block has also become an internet sensation, thanks to his Gymkhana video series, in which he was seen driving through perilous tracks and obstacle courses. The series received millions of views on YouTube.
He also appeared on BBC’s Top Gear along with actor Matt LeBlanc, in which they drifted and performed tire burnouts around London.
Block is also a co-founder of the sportswear brand DC Shoes.
The American Rally Association said that it was saddened by the death of the rally icon. “He was a massive influence on everything he touched, including the global world of rallying. His stewardship within the ARA these past few years was invaluable and he will be forever missed,” it stated in a Facebook post.
