MANILA: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is now producing around one million license plates per month.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When will the LTO clear the backlog for motor vehicle license plates?
According to the LTO, the backlog can be cleared by November 2023.How many is the current backlog on license plates?
Currently, there is 80,000 backlog for motor vehicle license plates and 13 million for motorcycle license plates. As the agency works to reduce the backlog for both the vehicle and motorcycle plates, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II inspects the stamping plant almost every day to make sure there will not be any delay in production.
Around 15 million plates have been ordered by the LTO through the Department of Transportation. At least eight machines are currently at work to speed up the production.
Mendoza stated that given the current production rate, the LTO will be able to address the 80,000 backlog for motor vehicle license plates by November.
He added that the increased production rate also ensures that there will be license plates available for newly purchased vehicles.
“I have instructed all district offices, regional directors that we should be able to cater to the current demand as far as motor vehicles are concerned. We estimate that the current demand for motor vehicle plates is around 2,000 vehicles a day, so times two dahil front and back ang plaka (because the plate is mounted on the front and back), so it’s 4,000 a day. We have that capacity, there’s no reason why a buyer who comes to you now will have to wait months in order to get their plates,” Mendoza said.
LTO’s goal is for new vehicle owners to receive their license plates within seven to 10 days upon submitting the documentations.
For motorcycles, there is a backlog of around 13 million, most of which are for replacement from old green plates to the new white ones.
“With the current production rate, we will be able to wipe out the backlog for motorcycles by early 2025. Mas marami kase ito pero (This is more but) we are confident of addressing it, we are on the right track,” Mendoza assured.
