MMDA augments EDSA Busway's concrete barriers with steel bollards
MANILA: The MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) has installed steel bollards along EDSA as an added layer of protection after several PUBs (public utility buses) were caught on video by motorists’ dashcams speeding and hitting existing concrete barriers — sending them into traffic and damaging private vehicles.
"Yung aming gagawin po, ilalagay natin is yung steel bollards, hindi yung plastic bollards para kahit papaano may konting proteksyon. Ito rin yung ginagamit sa Skyway (What we’ll do is put steel bollards, not plastic bollards, so at least there’s a little protection. This is what the Skyway uses)," said MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia.
The concrete barriers will still be there, especially around the loading and unloading areas.
According to the agency, drivers are 100% to blame for the spate of accidents involving the concrete barriers that separate the EDSA busway from the lanes for private vehicles.
Some 6,000 steel bollards were installed over the weekend along the entire stretch of EDSA including underpasses and overpasses, in addition to some 36,000 concrete barriers that are in place.
Being slimmer than concrete barriers, the MMDA hopes that these bollards will be less like to get hit by buses.
