MMDA Gears Up For Upcoming Rainy Season; Issues List of Flood Prone Areas
MANILA: Just a week ago we saw Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) playing hero with their ‘Estero Blitz’ campaign. The flood prevention program involved clearing and maintenance of the canals, esteros, waterways leading to the manila bay to prevent key areas from being waterlogged. In addition they also scheduled a regular maintenance of 54 pumping stations across the country with 12 stations being equipped with new pumps. These pumping stations can sure pump really large quantities of water in mere seconds but we also know that when it comes to flooding, Philippine rains can be really unforgiving. Hence, to keep the motorists and commuters from getting caught in the rains, MMDA has issued a list of flood prone areas on their official website.
Talking about city flooding, adequate preparations have already been made by MMDA Philippines by clearing all the drains and sewers so that all the water flows out directly in the Manila bay. This will not only prevent areas from experiencing water logging, but will also eliminate any problems related to pests and mosquitoes that become a menace during the rainy season. Like already mentioned above, the Philippine rains can become a real problem regardless of all the preparations the government authorities can make. Adding to the huge list of problems is the daily traffic and huge volumes of commuters in large cities, that make the situation appear like a hellish nightmare.
Therefore it is important that the commuters are pre informed about any places that are prone to flooding and waterlogging, so they can take the necessary precautions. The list has been issued by the Metro Manila Flood Control Information Center (FCIC) and includes over 85 locations in 10 cities. FCIC operates under the direct jurisdiction of Metro Manila Development Authority and although they have installed some advanced flood mitigation equipment, they’re totally aware of the havoc that the rains can wreak. It is certainly not a sign of weakness to acknowledge the sheer destructive force that nature is and it is the display of humility by MMDA, which has led to their heroic imagery among the Philippine public.
