Nearly 20,000 Porsche Taycan units sold in H1

Nearly 20,000 Porsche Taycan units sold in H1

MANILA: During the launch of the all-electric Porsche Mission R concept race car at the IAA Mobility 2021 in Germany, the company’s chief executive revealed that the Taycan, Porsche’s first production all-electric four-door sports car, has gained a huge global demand.

“Our original production capacity for the Taycan was 20,000 units this year. We’ve sold that many in the first half of the year,” Porsche AG Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume stated. “Incoming orders are huge.”

The total sales of the Taycan in the first six months of 2021 were nearly the same as the full-year total in 2020. From January to June this year, Porsche moved a total of 19,822 Taycan units worldwide, which is nearly the same as the 20,015 units that were sold for the whole 2020. Moreover, the six-month total deliveries of Taycan have almost matched that of the iconic 911 sports car, which reached 20,611 units during the same period. The Porsche 911 recorded a 22% increase in sales versus the same period last year.

In an earlier statement, Porsche AG Executive Board for Sales and Marketing Member Detlev von Platen said, “The rate of electrification is growing in all regions. This development confirms the path that we have taken with our drive strategy. In Europe, around 40% of the cars currently being delivered have an electric motor—whether they’re a purely electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid.”

Porsche has reported a 31% sales growth in the first six months of the year versus the same period in 2020.

“Our order books are full. At the same time, we are aware of the uncertainties caused by the corona pandemic and the semiconductor supply situation. We are continuing to keep a close eye on the overall situation while maintaining our optimistic stance,” Von Platen added.

The Taycan was first introduced as the Mission E concept car in 2015. It was officially launched in 2019 and marked its full year on the market in 2020. Its derivative model, the Taycan Turismo crossover, was initially unveiled as the Mission E Cross Turismo in 2018 and went into production this year. With the newly unveiled Mission R, Porsche is presenting its vision of customer motorsports program in the future.

The Mission R is an all-wheel drive race car that is powered by two electric motors delivering just under 1,100hp. It can accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in less than 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of over 300kph. With the advanced 900-volt technology and Porsche Turbo Charging, the race car can be charged from 5% to 80% in just 15 minutes.
