New bus stops, barriers, separators on EDSA now 80% complete
MANILA: The MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) says the new bus stops, concrete barriers, and steel separators being constructed along the median lane of EDSA are 80% complete.
“Currently, out of the 16 bus stops, four are available in the median lane along EDSA,” said MMDA Spokesperson Celine Pialago.
Five traffic constables and one motorcycle-riding enforcer were assigned to patrol EDSA, with a special focus on the median lane in order to ensure the safety of passengers as the construction is still ongoing.
Pialago stressed that despite the traffic along EDSA, the bus lane is for the exclusive use of PUBs (public utility buses), with only a few exceptions.
“Private vehicles, even vehicles with red plates are not allowed on the EDSA busway, except government emergency vehicles, patrol units, ambulances, city buses, buses for augmentation,” Pialago added.
Per the MMDA’s observation, travel time for PUBs on EDSA has decreased from two to three hours to only 45 minutes, including bus stops.
Pialago says the construction will be finished soon and expects the bus stops to be operational by August to September 2020.
