New Toyota GR 86 revealed
MANILA: Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) has officially unveiled the new GR 86 in a virtual event that was organized with Subaru Corporation. The new GR 86 is the third model in TGR’s GR sports car lineup.
The new GR 86 was jointly produced with the new Subaru BRZ. Although both cars were built with the same vehicle base, both provide a distinct driving experience. TGR focused on crafting a vehicle that would satisfy Toyota 86 fans and obtain an evolution of the car’s exceptional driving feel. This objective paved the way for the development of the new GR 86, which is particularly designed for sports performance and offers first-class driving experience.
The GR 86 features a remarkable exterior look that makes it distinct compared to other front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicles. The car fender tops are stretched horizontally to the beltline. Moreover, the new GR 86 is designed with low, horizontal underbody and narrow cabin rear to create a wide and low-center-of-gravity illusion. The vehicle also features a GR-specific functional matrix grille that puts together performance and emotionality.
The vehicle’s operating system includes various switches and the horizontally accented instrument panel which are strategically positioned to provide a space that allows the driver to focus more on driving. The GR 86 is also comes with a seven-inch TFT screen that has an opening animation sequence inspired by the piston movements of the vehicle’s engine to stimulate a sense of enthusiasm even before the drive begins.
Under the car’s hood is a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that delivers a maximum power output of 235ps at 7,000rpm and a maximum torque of 250Nm at 3,700rpm. The engine displacement size was increased from 2.0 liters to 2.4 liters. The vehicle’s new powertrain enables the car’s capability to accelerate from zero to 100kph in just 6.3 seconds. TGR has also improved the engine responsiveness of the new GR 86 to achieve smooth sensations from low to high rpms.
The new GR 86 measures 4,365mm long, 1,755mm wide, and 1,310mm tall. Its overall dimensions are almost the same as the previous model. Since the overall height and hip-point were restricted, the vehicle’s turning performance was highly improved. The GR 86 is built with aluminum roof panels to lower the center of gravity, and aluminum fenders and upgraded front seats and mufflers to reduce weight.
TGR has enhanced the body rigidity of the new GR 86 to enable better handling in any speed range. The torsional rigidity was also improved by around 50% to achieve greater steering stability.
The GR 86 is also equipped with aerodynamic components that were derived from the 86 models that performed on the race tracks. These components include air outlets, side sill spoilers, and other parts that help enhance steering stability.
The new GR 86 comes in six-speed manual and six-speed automatic variants. The automatic version uses Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology that offers safety support in regular driving, pre-collision safety technologies that prevent or lessen crash impacts, and emergency rescue support and secondary collision avoidance support that are useful in the event of an accident.
