Ortigas Land, Pasig LGU introduce pedestrian-, biker-friendly Kapitolyo intersection
MANILA: Premier property developer Ortigas Land has partnered with the local government of Pasig City to develop a pedestrian-friendly intersection along Shaw Boulevard, between Capitol Commons and Barangay Kapitolyo.
The new infrastructure comes with features that promote safety among pedestrians and cyclists including upgraded walkways, a pedestrian safety island, and improved bike features. The walkways connect Unimart Capitol Commons, Gastro at Capitol Commons, and Barangay Kapitolyo. Pedestrian signs and lights are also installed to guide pedestrians and provide visual cues for motorists.
Safety islands are also provided to serve as a secure area for pedestrians while they wait for the green signal. The intersection also comes with different bike features that will ensure the safety of every cyclist.
The Pasig City Government and Ortigas Land have also introduced bike boxes which are the designated priority areas for cyclists that will allow them to get ahead of traffic and provide a safe wat to make left turns. With all these upgrades, the intersection is now considered as the country’s first LGU-led protected bike line.
The upgrades on the intersection not only benefit pedestrians and cyclists, but it also help motorists through a new traffic signalization system and more convenient access to other roads. The new traffic signalization system guarantees smooth traffic flow from the Camino Verde Road of Capitol Commons, Shaw Boulevard, and West Capitol Drive. This will enable proper phasing of crossing of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists which will reduce traffic congestion and ensure everyone’s safety.
The intersection also gives motorists quicker access to Kalayaan Bridge which will reduce travel time from Ortigas Center and Capitol Commons to Bonifacio Global City and Makati City.
The improved intersection across Capitol Commons is part of Ortigas Land’s initiatives to promote pedestrian- and bike-friendly spaces in their properties.
Ortigas Land previously opened the Greenhills Active Playground at Greenhills Shopping Center in partnership with the City Government of San Juan City. It features dedicated bike lanes which are open 24/7. It also covers the streets that the LGU has designated as no parking zones.
Meanwhile, Ortigas East has introduced eye-catching pedestrian lanes and bike stops throughout the estate. On the other hand, Circulo Verde has its Bike Playground and perimeter road which cyclists could also use as a pathway for exercise.
Ortigas Land is also set to inaugurate the Circulo Verde bridge soon, which will also come with dedicated bike lanes. The bridge will link Pasig to Quezon City.
All estates developed by Ortigas Land have dedicated pathways for pedestrians and people with disabilities (PWD).
