PNP data shows DUI main cause of collisions with EDSA busway barriers
MANILA: Half of all vehicular accidents involving the EDSA busway barriers have been caused by drivers under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. This was announced by MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) spokesperson Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago.
Her information comes from the result of an investigation by the traffic bureaus of the PNP (Philippine National Police).
“Kalahati po nito ay nabangga ang concrete barrier dahil po sila ay nakainom (Half of all who had a collision with the concrete barriers were DUI),” Pialago said.
The good news is from a high of 40 accidents in the month of June, we are down to just 12 accidents so far this month, according to Pialago, and there are only nine days left in the month.
Solar-powered warning signs have been installed on the concrete barriers by the MMDA to ensure that these are lit up and visible, especially at night.
“Ang laking tulong po ng mahigit labing-anim na solar-powered early warning signs na inilagay po ng MMDA para ho abisuhan ang mga motorista (The 16 solar-powered early warning signs from the MMDA have been a great help to signal drivers),” Pialago added.
9,000 concrete barriers will be delivered within the week and 27,000 more over the next 45 days to complete the segregation of the EDSA busway situation along the innermost lane of EDSA from private vehicles.
Each concrete barrier costs Php 4,300.
