What powers the second-generation Porsche Macan?
The second-generation Porsche Macan is powered by the brand's latest generation of permanently-excited PSM electric motors. When will Porsche begin deliveries of the gen-two Macan?
Porsche said that deliveries of the second-generation Macan will commence in the second half of 2024.“We are taking the Macan to a completely new level — with exceptional E-Performance, the new Driver Experience, and a very impressive design,” Porsche Chairman of the Executive Board Oliver Blume said.
Per the German automotive brand, the new Porsche Macan — comprised of the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo — aims to completely fulfill the requirements of its customers when it comes to choosing a sport utility vehicle (SUV).
“Our aim is to offer the sportiest model in its segment with the all-electric Macan,” Porsche Macan Product Line Vice President Jörg Kerner explained.
Powering the second-generation Porsche Macan is the latest generation of permanently-excited PSM electric motors on the front and rear axles. The said setup works to achieve excellent efficiency and enable optimum reproducibility of the power output.
Speaking of which, the Porsche Macan 4 puts out approximately 402 horsepower with 650 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque while the Macan Tubro ups the numbers with 630 horses and 1,130Nm of pulling power.
The former clocks in with a top speed of 220 kilometers per hour (kph) and can zoom from a standstill to 100kph in 5.2 seconds while the latter boasts a peak speed of 260kph and a zero to 100kph acceleration in just 3.3 seconds.
Juice for both the Porsche Macan 4 and Macan Turbo is provided by a 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery, of which up to 95 kWh can be actively used.
According to Porsche, the said high-voltage battery was used by the Stuttgart-based carmaker for the first time in the Macan and is a central component of the newly developed Premium Platform Electric system with 800-volt architecture.
In terms of range, the battery provides the Porsche Macan 4 with around 613 kilometers (km). On the other hand, the Macan Turbo can churn out about 591km.
Reflecting its capabilities, the second-gen Porsche Macan dons sharper proportions and Porsche Design DNA.
“With the all-electric Macan, we are presenting the first Porsche that we are taking electric from an established product identity,” noted Porsche Style Vice President Michael Mauer.
“The new Macan is clearly recognizable by its brand identity as part of the Porsche product family. The classic Porsche proportions have been further developed and optimally adapted to the challenges of an electric vehicle. This has further heightened the sporty, modern, and dynamic appearance of the Macan. The design makes it clear: The Macan remains the sports car in its segment, even in electric form,” he added.
Notable are its two-part headlights, flat rear windows, frameless doors with characteristic side blades, and its set of 22-inch wheels.
In addition to its sporty and sexy design, the Porsche Macan also flaunts active and passive aerodynamic elements that result in a drag coefficient of 0.25 — making the electric SUV one of the most streamlined models on the market.
Porsche pointed out that these aerodynamic components include the “adaptive rear spoiler, active cooling flaps on the front air intakes, and flexible covers on the fully sealed underbody.”
Meanwhile, “air curtains below the headlight module and the low-slung front end optimize the airflow. At the rear, lateral tear-off edges and the louvered diffuser ensure aerodynamic efficiency.”
Inside, the gen-two Porsche Macan gets a free-standing 12.6-inch, curved-design instrument cluster and a 10.9-inch central display. The front passenger can also get his or her own screen thanks to an optional 10.9-inch display.
And for the first time, the Porsche Driver Experience also now comes with a head-up display and augmented reality technology. The image — the automotive brand noted — appears to the driver at a distance of 10 meters and corresponds to the size of an 87-inch display.
“Since 2014, Porsche has delivered more than 800,000 examples of the Macan worldwide. This success story is set to continue with this all-electric successor, which is produced in a net carbon-neutral way at the Porsche Plant Leipzig.” Porsche wrote in a press release.
Deliveries of the second-generation Porsche Macan is expected to commence during the second half of 2024.
