Subaru celebrates 50th year of its AWD system

MANILA: Subaru Corporation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system this year.

In September 1972, Subaru launched its AWD system along with the debut of the Subaru Leone 4WD Estate Van, Japan’s first mass-produced AWD passenger car. Since then, Subaru has manufactured around 21 million AWD vehicles.

98% of Subaru’s global sales are AWD models, all of which come with the Subaru Symmetrical AWD system with the horizontally opposed Boxer engine. The weight balance of the symmetrical drivetrain and the lower center of gravity provided by the Boxer engine enhances traction and stability, delivering exceptional performance in any road and weather condition.

Under the philosophy of “human-oriented car making,” Subaru continues to improve its AWD capability to provide a better connection between the occupants and the vehicle, increasing “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind.”

Subaru also continues to improve the AWD technology of its electrified models. The e-Boxer-equipped models come with a highly-responsive motor that enables more precise control of AWD, ensuring safety on slippery road surfaces such as on snow or ice as well as enhanced capability on rugged terrain.

In 2005, Subaru launched its AWD R&D initiative and the expertise gained from this was used for the development of the all-new Solterra’s dual-motor AWD system, equipping the electric SUV with the driving capability and enjoyment characteristic of Subaru.

Toward the age of electrification, we will further refine our long-cultivated AWD capability with electrification technology and continue to pursue the ‘Subaru Difference,’ such as stability, driving dynamics, and handling,” Subaru Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Tomomi Nakamura stated.

By further enhancing its core technologies and continuously exploring future technologies to keep up with the changing times, Subaru stays true to its commitment to providing customers with “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind.”
