The likes of Honda Jazz, City, and HR-V to get i-MMD tech

MANILA: Gasoline and diesel are sure to be replaced by much cleaner and efficient fuels in the future. With more and more automobile manufacturers now joining the lane of hybrid and pure electric vehicles, the number of both hybrid and all-electric cars should shoot up with the passage of time. However, with these vehicles being a lot expensive than the cars with the conventional internal combustion engines, the adoption rate of both the hybrids and the EVs has been much slower than the governments and automakers have estimated of late.

In order to cause a surge in the adoption rate of the hybrid cars, Honda has decided to equip its smaller cars with its two-stage hybrid system or the i-MMD Sport Hybrid system. Just in case you’re wondering what i-MMD stands for, the full form is Intelligent Multi Mode Drive. Bigger and expensive Honda cars like CR-V, Accord, and Odyssey already flaunt the technology and equipping the smaller offerings like HR-V/Vezel, City/Grace, and Jazz/Fit with the tech will make it accessible for even more customers.

Yes, all these smaller Honda cars already feature the Japanese automaker’s Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive, i.e., the i-DCD hybrid system. However, the arrival of the all-new Jazz and City with the i-MMD system should enhance the efficiency of these cars even more. Thanks to the dual-stage motor system, the i-MMD provides the customers with both higher range and enhanced efficiency. Unlike the i-DCD system that uses a dual-clutch transmission, the i-MMD incorporates an e-CVT. On the current-gen Odyssey, Accord, and CR-V, the i-MMD works in conjunction with a 2.0-litre motor. The setup as a whole makes 212 PS of maximum power,

On the Jazz, City, and HR-V, we have a smaller 1.5-litre mill. The total power produced is expected to be more than the 137 PS produced by the current i-DCD system on the same cars. With that said, the next-gen Jazz, City, and HR-V housing the i-MMD system may produce even more juice than the 1.8-litre Honda Civic. The all-new Honda Jazz is set to step on the podium at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show later this year, which means we’re not too far from seeing the next-gen hatch with revisited looks and revamped powertrain.
