The Nettuno is Maserati’s most powerful engine yet
MANILA: Maserati has released details about its most powerful engine to date, the made-in-Modena and 100% homegrown Nettuno.
The Italian luxury automaker calls it a “futuristic” engine and has taken the necessary steps to safeguard its technology including getting international patents.
Designed in various Maserati facilities in Modena, it began its life in the Maserati Innovation Lab on Via Emilia Ovest, before moving to the workshops on Via Delle Nazioni (Maserati Corse’s historic base). Its final destination is the Engine Hub situated at the famous Viale Ciro Menotti address where it will be built.
This 3.0L, six-cylinder, twin-turbo engine uses a V90° architecture and a dry sump, which is a super sports car feature where extra oil is stored in a tank outside the engine rather than in the oil pan for better temperature control and to prevent oil starvation in the engine among others. Compression ratio is 11:1.
What makes the Nettuno stand out is its innovative pre-chamber combustion systems that uses twin-spark plugs, technology taken straight from Formula 1.
The pre-chamber is a combustion chamber set between the central electrode and the traditional combustion chamber and connected by a series of specially-designed holes. A traditional sparkplug acts as a support to ensure constant combustion when the engine is operating at a level that doesn’t need the pre-chamber to kick in. The twin injection system is both direct and indirect, and is linked to the fuel supply pressure at 350bar, (USA 5076psi), which allows the system to reduce noise low down on the rev range, lowers emissions and improves consumption.
Total power output is 621hp at 7,500rpm and 730Nm of torque from 3,000rpm.
The Nettuno will debut inside the super sports car Maserati MC20 at the "MMXX: The time to be audacious" event that starts on 09 September.
