TMP kicks off 2021 season of Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup
MANILA: Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) kicked off this year’s edition of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga last July 9 and 10.
The event started with a surprise appearance of the Toyota GR Yaris driven by TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto. A total of 24 autocross and 24 circuit racers across three classes participated in this year’s Vios Cup, while the online community shared the thrill and excitement in real time.
Since no live audience was allowed in keeping with health and safety protocols for the participants, TMP live-streamed the racing events to let racing fans cheer for their favorite racers safely from their homes.
In his remarks during the opening ceremony, Okamoto said, “Toyota Gazoo Racing is all about pushing the limits for the better. We had to hit the brakes due to the pandemic last year, but now, we are back with an even more exciting race! So here we are today at the Clark International Speedway, returning with the ever-reliable Vios. This Filipino-made car is really fun to drive on the road and the tracks. With hope for better days ahead and maximum safety protocols, we move forward and race on!”
Maila Alivia and Jiro Garbes capped off the event with podium finishes in two out of three races of the Promotional Class in the Circuit Championship. Meanwhile, celebrity racers Troy Montero and Fabio Ide had one podium finish in the same class.
For the Sporting Class, Iñigo Anton and Julian Tang were able to maintain their spot at the podium, while Joaquin Garrido was displaced by Jacob Ang in the top three by the third race of the weekend. For the Super Sporting Class, Gerard Loy remained to be a consistent podium placer. Estefano Rivera and Red Diwa were able to take spots at the podium in the first two races, but Bryan Co and Marc Soong claimed their place by the third race.
Actor Alex Diaz ruled the Autocross Challenge Celebrities and Influencers Class. He was followed by TV star John Manalo and social media personality Jules Aquino. In the Media Class, Jose Altoveros was hailed as the champion, followed by Ian Magbanua and Iñigo Roces.
