Top 5 upcoming hatchbacks to look for in 2020
Last month of 2019 has arrived and now if we look back, we would realise that it has been a fruitful year for the Philippines auto industry with the launch of many new cars that gave the buyers more options to choose from. And we think that the next year will be even more fruitful. Why? Well, just to give you a hint, here are the top 5 upcoming hatchbacks to look for in 2020.
Mitsubishi Mirage
Mitsubishi Mirage is the only hatchback that the Diamond Star brand has got for the Philippines market. It has been around for quite some time now and deserves an update now. Apparently, there is indeed an update to the car which has been revealed in Thailand.
Yes, that’s right. Mitsubishi revealed its 2020 Mirage and Mirage G4 (sedan variant) in Thailand. It is certainly an update that we would want to have here in the Philippines. The new hatchback gets a design makeover with the implementation of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design.
The interior has also been revamped and has new features like a 7-in infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In terms of engine, the 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage has the same 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 78 bhp and 100 Nm.
Although Mitsubishi Philippines hasn’t revealed any information regarding the launch of the new Mirage, we are expecting and hoping it to arrive sometime in 2020.
Peugeot 308
Peugeot has only three models available in the Philippines - 3008, 5008, and Traveller - and it is planning to turn that counter to four by launching its new 308 hatchback. The 308 has the same Peugeot genes as the rest of the brand’s line-up. There are various design elements which make the 308 stand out from the crowd. We personally like the design of the alloy wheels and the LED taillights.
Powering the Peugeot 308 hatchback would be a 1.6-litre petrol engine which churns out close to 150 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. There could also be a diesel engine option but we’re not too sure about it. Peugeot takes safety quite seriously and that’s why the 308 has been rated among the safest cars by Euro NCAP.
We don’t have an exact date of 308’s launch but Peugeot could make that happen next year.
Nissan Leaf
During an event called Nissan Futures that took place in Hong Kong earlier this year, Nissan said that it will bring its fully electric Leaf in the Philippines in 2020. Nissan Leaf is a very popular and highly successful electric vehicle that has been on sale in different parts of the world for many years now. And it is now time for us to have it as well.
The latest Nissan Leaf is in its second-generation. It has a battery pack of 40 kWh which provides a claimed range of approx 240 km. The electric motor produces around 147 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque that is available instantly.
We have a special attachment with the conventional cars but we can’t ignore the fact that electric cars are now a part of the automobile industry and we’re glad that Nissan is going to bring one of the most successful electric cars in the world in the Philippines in 2020; let us just see when in 2020.
Honda Jazz
Honda Jazz is one of the most famous hatchbacks not just here in the Philippines but in various other markets globally. No doubt why it is an important car for the company. And soon there’s going to be a new one. Honda unveiled the 2020 Jazz at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show and it seemed to be a totally new car!
The 2020 Honda Jazz not only gets a complete design overhaul but also gets a plethora of new features. For example, it has a two-spoke steering wheel that looks so cool and different from the conventional 3-spoke unit. Honda has also made the Jazz safer than ever by implementing features like Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Keeping Assist System, and whatnot.
Honda still hasn’t released info about the new Jazz’s engine options but it’s being anticipated that it could feature a hybrid option along with the conventional engine options. The new Jazz is expected to go on sale in February 2020 and we could get it here soon after.
VW Polo
It wouldn’t be incorrect to say that most of the people around the world know about the brand Volkswagen only because of the Polo. VW Polo is that popular but unfortunately, we have been kept deprived of it all these years. However, that might change in 2020 because as per the recent news, VW might bring its latest Polo here in the Philippines!
VW Polo always had a racing touch to it and its latest model continues to have that gene. It is a car that a driving enthusiast loves to drive. Under its hood is expected to be a 1.5-litre lightweight all-aluminium petrol engine which churns out 113 bhp and 145 Nm of torque.
It would also have a bunch of latest safety and driver-assist features like active brake assist, multiple collision prevention, dynamic stability control, cruise control, front and rear parking radar, etc. We have our eyes and ears wide open for any update regarding the Polo’s launch in the Philippines, so stay tuned.
These were the top 5 hatchbacks that you should look for in 2020. Which one are you waiting for? Of course, there will be many more other car and bike launches and we will be there to cover them all.
