Toyota 86 and Subaru BR-Z not to be discontinued

MANILA: It was being anticipated that the Toyobaru (Toyota and Subaru) twins, 86 and BR-Z might not see another generation. However, within a short span of just a month, we have subtle confirmations from both the brands.

A month after Toyota’s statement that these cars are not being killed off, one of Subaru’s spokesperson has also announced that the twins, 86 and BR-Z will get another generation.

Supra’s entry-level variant churns out a maximum power of 197 PS, which is similar to the Toyota 86. Subaru is now giving all of its vehicles to SGP (Subaru Global Platform), which is only for the all-wheel drive applications. That is why the death rumours of BR-Z and 86 were floating.

Considering the new BR-Z and 86 are Toyobaru twins, the new edition will be a collaborative effort between Subaru and Toyota. As per one of the Subaru’s spokesperson, “We are working on it. There will be a second-generation BR-Z”.

The next generation 86 and BR-Z will not be mid-engined cars as the officials of Subaru declined the rumors. These are expected to powered by the same classic front-engine with the rear-wheel drive as its predecessor.

Under the hood, the Toyota 86 comes with a 2.0-litre turbo engine sourced from BMW, while the Subaru BR-Z will have an updated 2.0-litre boxer engine. There is no information on whether the next BR-Z/86 will be turbocharged and naturally-aspirated.

These sports coupe duo will get either a boxer layout or an inline engine. Though there might not be enough power to the core, when turbocharged, the power output shall be adequate like the entry-level Supra.
