Toyota launches more powerful and dynamic 2021 GR Supra in US
MANILA: The current GR Supra in the market hasn’t even really warmed up yet and there’s already a new version waiting in the wings.
Toyota unveiled at the Daytona International Speedway last week a new GR Supra 3.0L while also unveiling a new 2.0L four-cylinder turbo model.
One thousand new A91 units will be made available and will come in two colors, Nocturnal and Refraction. It will come with a rear black carbon fiber lip spoiler, matte-black wheels, C-pillar graphics, and carbon fiber mirror caps. The premium and A91 trim will sport Brembo brake calipers painted in red, plus an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
With a new dual-branch exhaust manifold (using six ports instead of two), heat management is better, and more power has been squeezed out of the 3.0-liter engine. It goes up from 335hp at 5,000-6,500rpm to 382hp at 5,800-6,500rpm and from 495Nm of torque at 1,600-4,500 rpm to 499Nm at 1,800-5,000rpm. Acceleration from 0-100 kilometers per hour is now much faster at 3.9 seconds, down from 4.1.
Aside from engine updates, the body gets lightweight aluminum braces that tie the strut towers to the radiator support for increased lateral rigidity. It also gets new front and rear bump stops, and damper tuning.
Code controlling the electric power steering, adaptive variable suspension, vehicle stability control, and active differential have been revised as well to adapt to the hardware updates.
The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder trim is the entry-level option for prospective GR Supra buyers. Sharing a lot of engine tech with the 3.0-liter version, it has a twin-scroll turbo, direct fuel injection, and continuously variable timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Output is 255hp at 5,000-6,000rpm and 400Nm of torque at 1,550-4,400rpm.
It uses the same eight-speed automatic transmission and can go from 0-100 kilometers per hour in 5 seconds.
Both trims come with Toyota’s latest safety and technology package. It includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Parking Sensors with Emergency Brake Function, Navigation, and a 12-speaker 500-watt JBL Audio System.
