Toyota PH guarantees ‘no affected units’ in latest engine certification issue

MANILA: Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) guaranteed that "no units in the country got affected in the recent certification irregularity issue pertaining to the engines fitted in the brand’s key models.

In a statement, the leading automotive distributor in the country gave the assurance following the horsepower output certification tests.

According to TMP, the matter “relates to irregularities in the certification process based on national requirements in certain countries, but do not have any impact on horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values.”

“We would like to reassure our customers by stating that we believe their vehicles are unaffected by these irregularities. We apologize for any confusion or concern this issue may have caused,” the firm added.

Earlier, the mother company announced that Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) shall suspend the shipment of three engines namely the 1GD (equipped in the Land Cruiser Prado, Hiace, Hilux, and Fortuner) 2GD (fitted in the Hilux and Innova), and the F33A (found in the Land Cruiser 300 and Lexus LX500d), following the results of the investigation pertaining to horsepower output testing.

According to Japanese automaker, it was discovered during the test that the horsepower output performance of engines was measured using electronic control units with software that was different from those used for mass production to alter the results and make values appear smoother with less variation.”

The latest scandal followed the revocation of the model certification of select models from Toyota, Daihatsu, and Mazda.
