Toyota unveils all-new Corolla Cross in Japan

MANILA: Toyota Motor Corporation officially launched the all-new Corolla Cross in Japan yesterday, September 14.

Since it was first introduced in 1966, the Corolla nameplate has continued to evolve based on the “plus alpha” concept, seeking to exceed the expectations of the customers around the world and their varying needs. The Corolla series has featured a wider range of models with the aim to cater to the ever-changing lifestyles of its customers. The Corolla series is currently marketed in over 150 countries around the world. Last July, its cumulative sales reached 50 million units.

The all-new Corolla Cross carries the “plus alpha” concept and the mission of “staying close to customers and continuing to evolve.” It also embodies the outstanding utility characteristic of an SUV as it features a spacious interior and delivers high-powered performance with excellent fuel efficiency.

The Corolla Cross is designed with ample head clearance to ensure that every occupant can enjoy their ride in comfort. The front seats provide a high viewpoint expected on an SUV, while the rear seats can be easily accessed through large rear side doors. The Corolla Cross also features a panorama roof that provides outstanding sense of spaciousness. The roof has a large glass surface that helps expand the passengers’ scope of vision by providing views of the sky and a motorized retractable shade that lets the occupants control the amount of sunlight entering the cabin.

The all-new Corolla Cross also offers 487 liters of luggage capacity. The cargo area can even be expanded further by folding the rear seats. The vehicle is also designed with a large luggage door with a height of 720 mm above-ground to make it easier to load and unload cargo. The door also comes with a hands-free power function that allows it to be opened and closed by simply carrying a key and placing one’s foot under the rear bumper. The Corolla Cross is also equipped with a Luggage Active Box that provides extra storage space.

The Corolla Cross features an “urban and active” look that is rooted in its relaxed upper body — including glass surfaces and front and rear lights — and its wide bumpers. The vehicle comes in eight color variants that highlight its modern, sophisticated design.

Both the hybrid and gasoline variants of the Corolla Cross are equipped with 1.8-liter engines. The hybrid variants are said to deliver best-in-class fuel efficiency. These variants also come with E-Four electric 4WD systems that further improve the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and guarantee constant performance when accelerating and when driving on snow or other slippery surfaces.

The fully developed GAC platform is combined with a lightweight, rigid body frame to enable agile and stable steering. Sound-absorbing materials were also applied to reduce engine noise and road chatter and improve the comfort and quietness inside the cabin. All Corolla Cross variants are fitted with a MacPherson strut front suspension. The 2WD variants feature torsion beams and large rubber bushings in the rear, while the E-Four variants come with a double wishbone setup. The vehicle has a minimum turning radius of 5.2m, which is one of the smallest in its class, making maneuvering easier on narrow streets and in car parks.

The all-new Corolla Cross comes with the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense, which includes parking support brake and back guide monitor. It also has a Plus Support feature, which controls sudden acceleration due to misapplication of the accelerator pedal.

The hybrid variants of the Corolla Cross come with an accessory power outlet (AC100V/1,500W) and an Emergency Power Supply Mode that enables the vehicle to be used as a power source for electric appliances such as electric kettles and hair dryers.

All variants are also equipped with in-cabin USB terminals that allow the occupants to charge smartphones and other electrical devices during normal driving.

The pricing for the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross starts at ¥1.999 million (approximately P910,000).
