Toyota Yaris gets a new engine and styling upgrade
MANILA: The Toyota Yaris range will get a new engine and styling kits. Toyota’s upgrade comes in compliance with Thailand’s Phase II eco-car regulations, which follows the Euro 5 emission standards.
Toyota Motor Thailand has recently updated its Yaris range. The entry model of the eco-car gets an improved engine and stylish high-riding package. The new line of Toyota Yaris will now come in a revamped 1.2-liter 3NR-FKE four-cylinder engine. The Dual VVT-i has been upgraded to Dual VVT-iE; while the compression ratio is now 13.5:1, up from 11.5:1. The auto start-stop will also come standard in all variants.
Though most of the changes are mainly for efficiency and lower carbon emission, the capabilities of the engine have also improved slightly. From a capacity of 86 Hp of maximum power and 108 Nm of peak torque, the upgraded Yaris will be able to churn up to a maximum of 92 Hp of power and 109 Nm of peak torque. Fuel efficiency also improved from 20kpl to 23.3kpl. The Euro 5 compliant engine is mated to a Super CVT-i auto transmission.
Besides changing the engine, the Yaris range has also been streamlined. From the previous five variants— J Eco, J, E, G, G+, it has been cut down to three—Entry, Mid, and High. The new Entry model is equivalent to the J Eco, the Mid variant is the previous E, while the High model is the reincarnation of the G+.
The updated Yaris also comes with added features like a 6.7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, front/rear video recorder, and driver-assist features such as ABS/EBD/BA, VSC, and Hill Start Assist. Seven airbags (front, side, curtain, driver’s knee) also comes standard in all variants.
New Toyota Yaris price and variants are as follows:
- Toyota Yaris Entry –Php 902,800 (539,000 baht)
- Toyota Yaris Mid –Php 986,600 (589,000 baht)
- Toyota Yaris High –Php 1.087 Million (649,000 baht)
For styling, Toyota is selling the Yaris Cross kit to make your hatchback look more like an SUV. The kit includes front and rear black bumper skirting with silver “skid plates”, matching side skirts, black-coated roof, bespoke 16-inch alloy rims, and moldings on the wheel arches. The kit sells for 35,000 baht or roughly Php 58,600.
We wonder, will we get the upgraded Toyota Yaris here in the Philippines? We hope so.
