Volkswagen, Audi under Examination for using Illegal Emission Software
MANILA: The car emissions! Not only one of the important component while making a car but a raising concern all over. In brief, the emission standards are legal requirements imposed to keep the pollution under control. The main news is that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has accused VW and Audi of using an illegal “defect device” software to bypass emission tests.
Reports say that both these reputed brands used a “defeat device” which reduces nitrogen oxide (Nox) at up to 40 times in order to qualify emission standards during lab testing. The EPA said that around 482,000 Volkswagen and Audi cars used this “defeat device” to get themselves registered as clean vehicles.
The software was reported to be used in the 2009-2015 model year VW Beetle, Golf, Jetta, Audi A3 and VW Passat of 2014-2015. All these vehicles are equipped with a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo engine. The EPA explains that these vehicles have a software that automatically detects the undergoing of vehicle for emission testing and henceforth switches off during “real world” driving.
For this, EPA can apply maximum possible fine of USD 37,500 per vehicle which means that VW and Audi could face a hefty fine of USD 18 billion. To all this chaos, Volkswagen AG CEO Martin Winterkorn said, “The Board of Management at Volkswagen AG takes these findings very seriously. I personally am deeply sorry that we have broken the trust of our customers and the public. We will cooperate fully with the responsible agencies, with transparency and urgency, to clearly, openly, and completely establish all of the facts of this case. Volkswagen has ordered an external investigation of this matter,”
