Volvo cars won’t speed over 180 kmph anymore

MANILA: Volvo is known for the safety their cars provide to the occupants and even outsiders, thanks to top-notch equipment on work. And how can we forget the three-point seat belt sharing? Invented by Nils Bohlin, an engineer at Volvo, the three-point seat belt has saved many lives till date, hasn’t it?

All because Volvo was generous enough to share the patent with other automobile manufacturers. And now, with the engines getting better, the Volvo cars are becoming faster than ever. To restrain any mishaps occurring due to overspeeding, Volvo will be limiting the maximum speed of their vehicles to 180 kmph by 2020.

In case you’re wondering why is Volvo doing this, the company is trying “sending a strong signal about the dangers of speeding”. Volvo wants no death to occur due to or in their car by 2020, and the speed limit is just a beginning of what will be a journey to make their cars safe as a house. Jan Ivarsson, one of Volvo Cars’ leading safety experts,

said, “People often drive too fast in a given traffic situation and have poor speed adaption in relation to that traffic situation and their own capabilities as a driver. We need to support better behaviour and help people realize and understand that speeding is dangerous”.

If you drive a car or a motorcycle, you must have seen road signs near schools, hospitals, and other places indicating to slow down. Volvo is thinking of doing something similar by introducing what they call geofencing. This feature will automatically reduce the speed of their vehicles when they enter a zone with places like schools, hospitals, etc.

Volvo is also trying to address the issue of driving after consuming alcohol and inattentive driving. The Swedish automaker will be coming up with their proposals regarding these later this month, on 20 March 2019.

While the Volvo vehicles will be having a speed limit restricted to 180 kmph, the emergency and medical vehicles will be exempted and be able to attain speeds of over 180 kmph in the moment of need. At a time, when other manufacturers are busy counting their cash, Volvo is indeed looking after the safety of the population and should be appreciated, right?
