What cars Geely Haoyue will take on if it comes to PH?
Geely Philippines, a relatively newcomer in the local automotive industry, is definitely cementing its mark in the Philippine car industry as it aggressively penetrates the hottest vehicle segments in our country. After releasing the Geely Coolray crossover, the Chinese automaker is about to enter another hotly contested segment: the three-row, mid-size SUV with its Geely Haoyue offering. How will it stack up with the existing competition? Let’s find out based on what we know so far.
Because of our fetish for flexible family friendly-cars that could go from daily commuting to out-of-town vehicles, there are a lot of options to choose from when looking for a three-row, mid-size SUV. Top SUVs that would come to mind would be the Toyota Fortuner, Montero Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Comparing the Geely Haoyue with the more popular competitions, it is quite robust for its size and can compete with the local top tier contenders when it comes to size, headspace, and legroom. In fact, the Haoyue has one of the longest wheelbases in the midsize category and is just 30 mm shy of the Trailblazer which is the longest at 2,845 mm. In terms of total length and width, the Geely SUV is more robust in size as compared to what Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai offer. Again, it comes second to the Chevrolet Trailblazer which is longer by 43 mm and slightly wider by only 2 mm—a very minuscule difference. However, when it comes to the height of the vehicle, the Haoyue is on the shorter side with a height of 1,780 mm. The only SUV that’s shorter than the Haoyue is the Hyundai Santa Fe at 1,690 mm.
Engine and performance
Because Geely has yet to release any further details to keep everyone in suspense, speculations abound when it comes to the mill. Several motoring websites suggest that the new Geely Haoyue will be powered by the same 1.5 liters and or 1.8 liters three cylinders, turbocharged petrol engines found in their current portfolio. The 1.5-liter engine is capable of delivering 174 hp of power and 255 Nm of torque which will be mated to either a six-speed automatic or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. For the larger 1.8 liter engine, similarly found in the new Geely Boyue Pro, it can deliver 181 hp and 300 Nm of torque and will be partnered with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch unit.
Compared to the segment rivals, engine performance is very competitive despite the size. There are several engine options that most manufacturers offer for their mid-size SUVs, but almost all of them do offer their engines at 2.0-liter and above and uses mostly diesel for fuel. Chevrolet, for instance, has 2.5 liter and 2.8-liter engines for their Trailblazer; the Sante Fe is offered with a 2.2-liter engine; 2.4-liter for the Montoro Sport; while the Fortuner is offered in 2.4, 2.7, and 2.8-liter gasoline and diesel engine options. However, despite the size of the engine, the output of the Geely Haoyue remains competitive as we can see on the matrix below.

Though the Geely Haoyue has the least torque by comparison, the power remains competitive and even outdo the power output of the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero Sport. What is more, the new Geely mid-size SUV is said to be more fuel-efficient— at 97 percent, compared to its sibling, Boyue.
Design
Since Geely only released teaser photos as of this writing, there is yet any data on how the Haoyue will look like inside. However, the external styling is quite imposing. The robust and muscular profile starts at the front of the car. It has an angular hood with a front grille that has a ‘rippling’ design pattern. The angular headlight is accentuated with hockey stick LED daytime running lights. This Geely midsize SUV also features a prominent lower bumper with skid plates and integrated air intakes flanked by stacked LED front fog lights encased in a prominent housing. The side profiles continue the strong crease design. The rear portion of the vehicle is somewhat minimalist compared to its front but holds the same angular design for the taillights which is connected by a narrow chrome line. On top are roof rails and shark fin to complete the rugged look that is expected on an SUV. Down below, this Geely SUV rides on a set of 19-inch two-tone wheels wrapped in 225/55 profile Kumho Crugen rubber.
Price
Since Geely only released a teaser photo, expect further details like the pricing to be released on a later date. However, given the price point of the Coolray, expect Geely to offer the Haoyue on the same competitive price point to undercut the competition.
