Here are the Suzuki Avenis' hits and misses

The Suzuki Avenis currently stands as a strong contender in the very hotly contested local 125-cubic centimeter (cc) scooter segment.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the price of the Suzuki Avenis in the Philippines?

In the Philippines, the Suzuki Avenis is priced at P80,400.
  • How much horsepower and torque can the Suzuki Avenis produce?

The Suzuki Avenis can produce up to 8.3 horsepower and 10 Newton-meters of torque.
  • It has a number of good qualities going for it, which would-be buyers will be keen on learning more about.

The Suzuki scooter's one apparent strength is its relatively affordable suggested retail price of P80,400. But what other strengths does the Avenis have? Also, does the popular Suzuki scooter have some weaknesses? Let’s find out here.

    Pros

    Well-equipped for the price

The Suzuki Avenis is well-equipped relative to its asking price.

On the model’s compact but stout body, the Japanese motorcycle brand managed to fit plenty of useful bits like a fully digital instrument cluster, a side stand with a safety switch, a USB port, an electronic ignition system, and a pair of sporty-looking rear grab rails.

The two-wheeler likewise boasts a lot of legroom due to its generously large floorboard. Additionally, it has two dual utility hooks positioned above the floorboard, a 21.8-liter under-seat compartment, and a front rack that can store up to 1.6-liter of knick-knacks.

Visibility is also ensured while using the scooter, thanks to the presence of a sizable LED headlamp and a split-type taillight. Most average-sized Filipino users will also find its seat comfortable, but even wider riders will find it sufficient even for longer distances.

    Decent performance

Another key strength of the Avenis is its decent engine performance.

For reference, the motorcycle’s single-cylinder, single overhead cam 124-cc motor can generate up to 8.3 horsepower (hp) and 10 Newton-meters of torque.

Sure, the said engine output cannot match the Honda Click 125i’s 11 hp, but note that the Suzuki is 5 kilograms lighter. According to the World Motorcycle Test Cycle, the scooter also boasts a notable fuel economy of 54.9 kilometers per liter.

The motor of the Avenis likewise received all the advantages of the Suzuki Eco Performance (SEP) design philosophy.

According to the Hamamatsu-based brand, the SEP developmental concept ensures great riding performance without compromising efficiency and emissions standards. Suzuki accomplished the aforementioned through reduced friction in engine components, a high compression ratio, and an optimized cooling system.

Other notable mechanical components of the Avenis include the following:

    • Fuel-injection system
    • Engine air-cooling
    • Wet sump lubrication system
    • Continuously variable transmission
    • 5.2-liter fuel tank capacity.

The ride also gets reasonably strong stopping power thanks to its front disc and rear drum setup. Handling and ride comfort, on the other hand, is ensured by a telescopic oil-dampened front fork and a swing-arm type rear suspension.

The Avenis also has a decent amount of ground clearance for most Philippine roads. To be exact, it has 160-millimeters (mm), which is more than enough to deal with poorly maintained roads or even unpaved thoroughfares.

    Muscular looks

Suzuki itself has described the Avenis as a “muscular sport scooter.” The aforementioned is made evident by the generous amount of sharp corners and character lines on the bike’s fairings.

All in all, it makes the bike more assertive and more appealing to folks who like hyper-modern designs.

Complementing the overall look of the bike are subtle graphic designs spread around its body. It also has a shield-shaped meter visor, a 3D “Avenis” emblem, as well as a set of black-colored five-spoke wheels wrapped in tubeless tires.

One unique element of the Avenis is its tail-mounted port for its fuel tank. The design is unusual, but its position makes it more accessible.

Lastly, the model has three distinctive colors to choose from. There’s Metallic Matte Black, Pearl Blaze Orange, and Pearl Mirage White.

    Cons

    Lack of anti-lock braking

One weakness of the Avenis is the lack of an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Sure, it can be understood that the brand didn’t give the model the aforementioned feature to keep its price accessible, but any rider, regardless of skill level, should take extra care when bringing it to a stop.

With ABS, a rider can easily maintain control and stability even during hard braking. It isn’t an end-all-be-all safety system, but it's a nice feature to have, especially for folks who ride daily in various weather and road conditions.

    Final thoughts

Overall, the Suzuki Avenis is well worth its asking price, especially where performance and on-board features are concerned. It can make for a relatively cushy but practical ride with a very efficient engine to boot.

Folks who are keen on buying an Avenis, however, should give it a test ride first. Doing so will provide one with a better feel for the bike, and it will help in making a more informed purchase in the end.
