Mio Aerox 155 - Key highlights a buyer should know
Have the Mio Aerox 155 caught your eye yet? It is hard not to fall for those stylish lines that promise performance for anyone looking for a new underbone. For the youth of the Philippines, the Aerox 155 is a desirable proposition.
Aggressive Design
Just look at it. The design draws a lot of inspiration from the NMax but turns it into a racing machine. Frankly, it is hard to believe that something so aggressive comes from the Mio lineup. From the LED lights to the racy graphics, it not so subtly keeps hinting at its sporty intentions. One look at the riding stance, suspension setup, and the wide tires, it all gives the distinct impression of a baby R1. The racy and aggressive design is not just for show either.
HI-Tech Engine
This is the most powerful scooter in the Mio lineup. Its 155cc liquid cooled four valve engine that produces 15 PS of peak power at 8000 rpm and peak torque of 13.8 Nm at 6250 rpm. This is enough to propel the bike to a top speed of up to 121 kmph. Doing wheelies is as easy as twisting the throttle hard. The engine uses variable valve actuation that adjusts the fuel delivery for optimum performance throughout the rev range. At lower speeds, it gives higher torque, and at higher speeds, it switches up the power. Being liquid cooled, it also does not miss a beat even after idling in the heat for a long time. This engine also benefits from Yamaha’s Blue Core engine tech that keeps it cool and delivers higher power output without catastrophically increasing the fuel consumption. And indeed, getting a fuel economy figure of 40-45 m/L should not be that big of a hassle on this.
Practicality
Not everything in this underbone is geared towards aggression either. It is incredibly user-friendly and practical in many essential ways. There is a smart generator that allows silent starts and also saves weight in comparison to a conventional starter. The under seat storage area is a cavernous 25-litre that can swallow an entire full face helmet and then some more. There are plug points for charging devices and storage spaces to store those devices. Even the fuel lid is hidden under a plastic panel till you need to refill and press a button. The instrument display is extraordinarily comprehensive and futuristic too. It is a 5.8” digital LCD is bathed in Yamaha Blue. It is interactive too, using one single button and shows everything from battery charge level to fuel economy. It even incorporates a trip-meter.
Comfortable and safe
The seating position is comfortable and will not tire out the rider even on long drives. The seat height of 790mm, however, favours shorter riders. The telescopic front forks and the unit swing suspension at the rear make for a comfortable ride. There are wide and confidence inducing 110/80-14 C53P tubeless tires on the front and 140/70-14 C62P tubeless tires on the rear wheel. Braking is assigned to the hydraulic disc brake on the front and a mechanical drum brake on the rear wheel. This drum brake would have raised some eyebrows, but the Aerox also comes equipped ABS for more surety in braking.
For the price of Php 99800, you get an incredibly smart, capable, and practical underbone. The price does seem to make it a little less appealing. But the Aerox is worth its price. Yamaha tried to recreate the success of the NMax with the Aerox, and it certainly seems to be on the right track.
