An updated Yamaha Sniper 150 is here

MANILA: Yamaha Sniper, also called Crypton, Exciter, Jupiter, and Spark in other markets, is one of the most sought after underbones in the region. Not only this Yamaha two-wheeler is quite popular among the crowd but it has also taken the underbone racing to a new level. Interestingly, while the scooter turns 15 today, Yamaha, the parent of the underbone celebrates its 64th anniversary this year. In the commemoration of the two events, Yamaha has launched the newest iteration of the Sniper. The place was Race 2 of the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) UB150 and the all-new Yamaha Sniper was unveiled on the podium of the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.

The popularity and success of the Yamaha Sniper can be judged by the fact that around 70% of the contestants at the Race 2 of the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) UB150 were riding the Japanese underbone. The updates on the Yamaha Sniper include all-new styling, triple-cluster LED headlamp, a full LCD instrument cluster, and others. The changes in the aesthetics have also contributed to enhanced aerodynamic performance, said YMPH senior marketing manager Jude Camus.

The engine, on the other hand, remains the same 149.7cc SOHC four-valve single-cylinder four-stroke liquid-cooled motor that makes 15.4 PS of maximum power at 8,500 rpm and a peak torque of 13.8 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The power is sent to the rear wheel via a constant mesh five-speed transmission. The suspension setup is also the same as before with telescopic forks up front and monocross at the rear. Braking duties are handled by a 245 mm disc at the front and a 203 mm disc at the rear. Yamaha has still not added ABS on the moped, though.

More new additions on the moped include hazard lamps, leather seat, and an engine kill switch for added safety. Moreover, the front wheel and tyre are also wider than before, which result in better grip and improved handling. Yamaha Philippines has cited that the newest iteration of the moped may land on the Filipino shores anytime soon.
