BMW displays R 1200 GS, a self-riding bike, at CES 2019
MANILA: In November 2018, some videos of an autonomous adventure motorcycle became viral. And now BMW has showcased a prototype model of the riderless R1200 GS at the CES 2019 and has also explained how it works. Rookie riders faced problem while riding a 300 kg adventure bike and the manufacturer has been working on rider assist technologies for the past three years.
The BMW R 1200 GS displayed is able to start, stop, accelerate and slow down, all by itself. All of its actions will be based on what the driver is doing. The key objective of the motorcycle is to focus on the riding dynamics. The two-wheeler has been developed after researching heavily and has been tested earlier.
The autonomous system helps the riders to realize the dangerous situations a bit earlier. Also, the rider will get familiar with correct braking time, effective acceleration and ideal lines for the controlled cornering. Hence, learning these perfect assists will help to get rid of difficult and risky situations. As a result, the riders’ abilities and control over the machine will be improved, leading them to be trained perfectly to use the two-wheeler in real-world situations.
BMW Motorrad’s Vice President in North America, Michael Peyton has said that the two-wheeler has not received any gyroscopic technology. It uses braking technology, steering technology, shifting technology to work that way. The automaker has also added that it is a step forward to make the novice rider’s handling a bit better.
He also said that the self-riding motorcycle is a step forward to add more technologies in the near future. The technologies will all help the company to improve the riding dynamics and riders’ safety as well.
