BMW S 1000

The S-1000 R is known in the Philippines as one of the finest looking roadsters available. Quite rightly, the motorcycle, according to BMW, comes with an “emotional roadster look combined with supersports riding dynamics.” The chassis and frame design of the S-1000R is typically based on the S-1000RR, but the chassis is lighter and comes with a flex frame. The motorcycle has a sporty front and sleek tail end (the trending tail-up/nose-down design is prominent), with an aggressive split headlamp design, and strikingly noticeable gills. The full-scale LED lighting and 6.5-inch TFT screen can be the highlights of the bike’s already exquisite design.

Riding comfort is offered by telescopic forks on the front and an underslung swingarm on the rear. Along with the efficient suspension system, Full Floater Pro kinematics offer better support and ergonomics and help in temperature management. 

Weighing at around 205 kg and a seat height of 814 mm, the S-1000 R is a real pleasure to ride with all the power from its mill. BMW’s special technology, the Pro shift assistant makes seamless gear shifting both ways, without the use of the clutch. The bike has a wheelbase of 1438 mm and comes with wide tires, a 120/70 R17 in the front, and a 190/55 R17 at the rear. This leads to adequate grip and stability for the bike at high speeds. 

The S-1000 R has an engine derived from the S-1000RR and delivers quite similar race-oriented performance. The EFI 999cc inline-four liquid-cooled 4-stroke, DOHC engine offers impressive acceleration and dynamic response producing a peak power of 165 hp at 11,000 rpm and a peak torque of 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission system and has a self-reinforcing, anti-hopping clutch. 

The fine sound of the newly introduced standard HP titanium rear silencer is mentionable along with the pleasurable experience of riding a bike with a really powerful and aggressive engine. The S-1000 R has an approximate top speed of around 257 kmph, which is surely impressive. The bike comes with a fuel tank capacity of 17.5L which is also pretty convenient and commendable for a 1000cc bike. 

Safety is as good as it can be on the S-1000 R with a special drag torque control feature that helps prevent rear-wheel slippage. Along with that, safety features like Dynamic Traction Control, ABS Pro, steering damper, slipper clutch, and engine immobilizer as well as three riding modes: Rain, Road, and Dynamic come as standard. 

Braking power is offered by dual disc brakes on the front wheel and a single disc brake on the rear wheel. The stopping power is adequate and the bike does not feel unstable even during emergency braking thanks to the wide front and rear tires. 

BMW has taken the previous feedback and reviews very seriously while designing the new S 1000 R. The new architecture is foolproof and all-inclusive, and apart from the slightly stiff riding quality, and the comfort factor of the dual stepped seats, the bike is a great package starting at a price of  ₱1,095,000. Our verdict, if it’s a liter-class roadster, then the S-1000 R is surely one of the finest in the Philippines market.
