MDPPA celebrates 50th anniversary

MANILA: The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA) celebrated its 50th anniversary today.

To mark the occasion, the group staged an event in a mall in Quezon City where the distributors commemorated the Association's journey in shaping the Philippine motorcycle industry while advocating for responsible and safe motorcycling practices.

“Our journey of 50 years is a testament to our commitment to safety, innovation, and community. We remain steadfast in our purpose — to be the most relevant motorcycle association, proactively addressing the needs of industry stakeholders, and oriented towards global competitiveness and the sustainable development of the motorcycle industry,” commented MDPPA President Norminio Mojica.

Mojica also shared the organization’s history, noting that it all started in 1973 with the Philippine Motorcycle Manufacturing Program (PMMP). The said institution — the MDPPA President pointed out — was established with the goal of supporting the Philippine motor vehicle development program of the Board of Investments.

“PMMP’s main purpose then was to provide a center for the exchange and dissemination of knowledge, learning, expertise, and relevant information relating to the development of the motorcycle industry,” Mojica noted.

“Later on in 1989, PMMP will then change its name and be known to what we know as the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association or MDPPA,” he added.

“Since then, MDPPA has served as the premiere association, being at the forefront of the motorcycle manufacturing development and advancement in the Philippines,” Mojica stated.

The MDPPA President then explained that through the organization’s various committees, the motorcycle manufacturer’s association provided its technical expertise and assistance in crafting regulations and policies to help steer the local motorcycle industry.

Citing examples, Mojica said that “the association has introduced reforms and enhanced transportation registration processing system through our DIY or do-it-yourself concept.”

“MDPPA has likewise spearheaded countless road safety activities, the most prominent of which is the Generation Road Safety Campaign to espouse and spread awareness to the Youth. On the global arena, MDPPA, as a member of the Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries, has also been key in the harmonization of regulations and cooperation initiatives, especially in the Asian region,” he added.

The MDPPA also showed that it values its roots, as the group’s past leaders — namely Mateo Ocenar, Alfredo Alarcon, Rolando Cruz, Rodel Pablo, Catalina Calderon, Armando Reyes, and Alfredo Lejano — were recognized in the program through a special award ceremony.

Further, MDPPA had exhibit booths at the event, which showcased the latest advancements in motorcycle technology, safety gear, and accessories from different motorcycle-related brands in the industry.

The celebratory spirit was even elevated with a captivating concert featuring some of the Philippines’ top musical talents. Attendees were treated to an unforgettable night of music and entertainment.

Excitement reached its peak with the motorcycle raffle, where lucky participants went home with incredible prizes, including a brand-new motorcycle.
