Rebirth of the Daytona? Triumph files patents for the Daytona name in the US and Europe
MANILA: The Triumph Daytona has been in a rut for the past few years. The current model is not Euro 4 compliant and can only be sold until the end of the year under derogation rules. And yet there is no sign of a new Daytona or any upgrades.
However, there are now signs of activity from a different front. Triumph recently filed patents for the name 'Triumph Daytona' in America and Europe. What does this mean? That Triumph is probably going to launch the Daytona in the US and Europe. Triumph owns the Daytona name in the UK since 1995, but not in the US and Europe.
For middleweight supersports like the Daytona, the European market has been a disappointment in the recent times. Triumph might be aiming at shaking up the market in 2019. The suspicion grows even more when we consider that Triumph will be supplying their new 765cc in-line three-cylinder engine to Moto2. This new three-cylinder unit debuted on the Street Triple RS street-fighter where it produced a healthy 121 bhp and 77 Nm of peak torque. This engine seems like the right fit to go on a new Daytona. Although if it is to compete with the likes of Ducati SuperSport and the Yamaha YZF-R6, it will have to go for a tuning that gives a little more power. If it does launch, then there should also be a more tamed S version and a race specced RS version.
That being said, all of this is mere speculation based on little more than breadcrumbs. Moreover, the European market apparently now finds the 600cc supersports segment to be too race focused and unfit for new riders, with Euro 4 norms presenting another hurdle. The Honda CBR600 has already been discontinued in the European markets and there is no telling what other manufacturers are going to do. Perhaps the Triumph Daytona would be able to rejuvenate the supersports category. One can only hope.
