New Hatchback Cars for Sale in Philippines
When a person is out in the market for buying a car for the first ever time in his life, a hatchback is there on his priority list. The compact size, ease of driving, affordability and lower running costs make hatchbacks popular choices among first-time car buyers. It is the reason why hatchbacks outsell every other car type in terms of sales numbers, especially in emerging markets.
A hatchback is a compact four or five-seater car in a three-door or five-door configuration, which, unlike a sedan, has the boot compartment included within the cabin. It is usually compact, not measuring more than 4.5 meters. In the current era, all the hatchbacks are now built on monocoque constructions, with most of them having front-wheel-drive configurations.
Market Overview
Hatchbacks have always constituted a majority of the sales shares among cars sold in emerging markets such as the Philippines. Since most of the car buyers in the Philippines are mass-market buyers, hatchbacks are sold in abundance here. Almost every mainstream carmaker has a compact hatchback in its portfolio here in the Philippines, despite the rising popularity of compact SUVs.
The Philippines car market has hatchbacks having engines ranging from a puny 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and up to even a big 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol-powered car. Most of the hatchback offerings are present in the budget-oriented entry-level segments, which give the potential buyers an option to settle on a small and economic offering for their daily use.
Recently launched Hatchback in the Philippines
While the Philippines' car market has always been dominated mostly by entry-level economic hatchbacks, the country has started receiving state-of-the-art performance hatchbacks for enthusiasts as well. In recent times, premium hatchbacks like Mazda 3 Hatchback, Mazda 2 Hatchback and Mercedes-Benz A-Class came to the Philippines and upped the ante. At the same time, budget hatchbacks like Suzuki Celerio and S-Presso have made the competition for other hatchbacks evern fiercer.
Suzuki launched the S-Presso and Celerio, both of which cater to the entry-level category and are powered by the same 1.0-litre 66 PS petrol engine. Out of the two, S-Presso is smaller and has a quirky and SUV-esque design, while the slightly bigger Celerio has a rounded design theme and looks more conventional and spacious. Both these hatchbacks are offered in a couple of variants.
Mazda also gave both of its hatchbacks, the Mazda 2 Hatchback and Mazda 3 Hatchback, a few mild updates to stay in the game. Both of them come with naturally-aspirated petrol engines - 1.5-litre in Mazda 2 and 2.0-litre in Mazda 3. While the Mazda 3 is available in the Philippines in two variants – 2.0L Sport and 2.0L M Hybrid, the Mazda 2 Hatchback comes in a single 1.5L Sport variant.
The A-Class Hatchback from Mercedes-Benz comes in as one of the most premium and expensive five-door hatchbacks in the Philippines today. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatchback can now be purchased in two variants – the humble 180 Progressive with a 1.3-liter 136 PS petrol engine and a bonkers AMG 35 4MATIC variant with a 2.0-litre 310 PS petrol engine.
Popular Hatchback Cars of 2022
As said above, the Philippines car market has predominantly remained for small and entry-level hatchbacks, with some of them being the consistent rankers in the top ten selling cars in the market today. Following are some of the popular hatchbacks in the Philippines:
Toyota Wigo
Toyota’s smallest offering for the Philippines car market, the Wigo hatchback, is especially co-developed with Daihatsu for small and emerging markets. The 2022 Toyota Wigo is an entry-level compact hatchback suited for city usage and is available in four variants – E MT, G MT, G AT and TRD S AT, all of which get a puny 1.0-liter 65 bhp petrol engine.
Honda Brio
The Honda Brio is a direct rival to the Toyota Wigo but impresses more with its bigger car appeal in comparison. The 2022 Honda Brio is one of the most significant models available in the Philippines, which is on offer here with three variants – S CVT, V CVT and RS CVT, with a 1.2-litre 90 PS petrol engine powering all of them.
Suzuki S-Presso
The 2022 S-Presso is one of the latest offerings from Suzuki in the Philippines and has climbed the ladders of success here in the Philippines in a short span. The quirky-looking Suzuki S-Presso, with its SUV-ish design highlights, is available in the Philippines in two variants, GL MT and Special Edition, both of which share their 1.0-litre 66 PS petrol engine with the Celerio.
Kia Picanto
While Kia has most of its product offerings in the premium and midsize segments, the 2022 Picanto has affirmed Kia’s presence in the compact segment. The most affordable car from Kia, the Picanto has been the most successful model from the Korean carmaker here in the Philippines. The Kia Picanto has two variants on offer, LX MT with a 1.0-litre 66 PS petrol and EX MT with a 1.2-litre 83 PS petrol.
Mitsubishi Mirage
The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage might be the oldest in this list of compact hatchbacks, but it is still going strong in the Philippines car market with its value-for-money appeal. One of the most spacious hatchbacks available in the entry-level category, the Mitsubishi Mirage can be had in one of its two variants, 1.2 MT and 1.2 CVT, which are powered by a 1.2-litre 76 PS petrol engine.
Upcoming Hatchback Cars in 2022-23
Most of the carmakers are currently focusing on SUVs, which is why the hatchback category is witnessing not much new action shortly in the Philippines. For now, the Mazda 3 Hatchback is touted to get a new range-topping variant with a 2.0-litre petrol engine.
