What features does the Suzuki Jimny get?

Based on a ladder-on-frame chassis, the Suzuki Jimny, in this three-door version, gets a decent equipment list, if not the best in its price category. On the outside, the Suzuki Jimny features halogen headlamps in the GL variant and LED projector headlamps in the GLX variant, with the latter also having an auto levelling function. Both the variants come equipped with a rear wiper washer and demister and electrically-adjustable rearview mirrors, with the GLX also having fog lamps and headlamp washers at the front. 

The cabin design of both the variants of the Suzuki Jimny is similar, with both getting a black-themed cabin with hard but rugged plastics all around to keep the adventure vibe to the fullest. While the GL variant has a urethane steering wheel, the GLX has a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Featuring tilt adjustability as standard, the steering wheel in both variants has audio and Bluetooth controls, with the GLX also getting cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. 

Both the variants of the Suzuki Jimny have power windows, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with two front speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cup holders in the centre console, one USB socket, one USB charger, assist grips for front and rear and LCD MID in the instrument console, with the GLX also having two additional speakers at the rear and automatic climate control.

How spacious is it?

Being a compact three-door vehicle that measures 3,650mm long, 1,645mm wide and 1,725mm tall, the Suzuki Jimny lacks the space and comfort levels of a five-door monocoque SUV priced similarly. Due to a niche three-door design, the ingress and egress for rear seat passengers is a bit of a task, with the space at the rear also at a premium and is good enough only for two adults at best. The rear seats also feature a 50:50 split folding mechanism to liberate boot space, which is also restricted in this SUV. 

What engine and transmission options are available?

Powering both the variants of the Suzuki Jimny is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission in the GL variant and a 4-speed automatic transmission in the GLX variant. This engine claims a maximum power output of 102 PS and a maximum torque output of 130 Nm. 

What’s the mileage of the Suzuki Jimny?

While Suzuki Philippines hasn’t claimed the fuel efficiency figures of the Jimny three-door yet, it is expected to be in the ballpark of the Jimny 5-door for which Suzuki has mentioned the fuel efficiency figures (in India where it is manufactured). For reference, the Jimny 5-door claims a maximum of 16.94 kmpl with the manual transmission and 16.39 kmpl with the automatic transmission, and the three-door version is also expected to deliver the same figures. 

How safe is the Suzuki Jimny?

Suzuki follows a bare-basic approach with the safety equipment list for the Jimny. Both the variants of the Philippines-spec Jimny come with dual front airbags, ISOFIX mounts for child seats, ABS, electronic stability program, hill hold assist, hill descent control and reverse parking sensors. The GLX variant further gets a couple of more features like a reverse camera and headlamp washers. 

How many colour options are there?

The standard monotone colour options available in both the variants of the Suzuki Jimny are White, Solid Medium Grey and Solid Jungle Green. More exclusive colour options include Silky Silver Metallic for the GL variant and dual-tone colours like Solid Kinetic Yellow with a bluish-black roof and Chiffon Ivory Metallic with a bluish-black roof in the GLX variant.

The Suzuki Jimny is not for those who want a practical and comfortable SUV for their family. Instead, it is purely for those who want to have a niche and proper four-wheel-drive SUV to explore various adventures off-tarmac with its rugged 4WD system and suspension. Also, thanks to its compact dimensions, it is a perfect adventure-oriented SUV for beginner 4WD enthusiasts.

What are my alternatives?

In the price range in which it is being offered, the Suzuki Jimny holds the exclusivity of being the only three-door ladder-on-frame SUV, making it a supremely niche product. For its price, one can look for more family-oriented monocoque SUVs like Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Chevrolet Tracker, MG ZS, Nissan Kicks E-Power, Toyota Yaris Cross, Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi XForce, Honda HR-V, Ford Territory, Mazda CX-3, Volkswagen T-Cross, Jeep Compass and Peugeot 2008. 

Other things to consider

A proper four-wheel drive system, three-door design, and a rugged ladder-on-frame chassis make the Suzuki Jimny three-door a very niche and one-of-its-kind product. The Jimny three-door lacks the practicality and comfort of a five-door monocoque SUV, making it suitable only for a limited set of adventure-seeking buyers. However, if someone wants a Suzuki Jimny with a bigger touch of practicality, Suzuki now thankfully also has a Jimny 5-door on sale in the Philippines.
